Diary of a Submissive—-BlogHer Book Club Review #BHBC

October 18, 2012 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Look out Anastasia Steele, here comes Sophie Morgan!

It seems that everyone I know is reading the 50 Shades of Grey series, including my some of the women in my life I would have least suspected would read. The genre of erotic romance has become more mainstream than ever before, it seems.

I read the book Diary of a Submissive this week and I have to admit that I did not expect it to be a love story. It chronicles the real life adventures of a 30-something woman and her quest for love, excitement, sweetness, strength and finding it all in one man. Sophie Morgan is a journalist. She is smart, she is young, she is exploring the world as young people do, but Sophie has a wild side.

I have to admit that I blushed a lot throughout the book. In fact, as I sit here typing this review, I feel the flush in my face as my cheeks redden. The story may not be for all readers, however it is very well written. The writing style has a flow and Sophie is a likable character. Aside from the erotic romance one is sure to discover between the covers of this book, there is a journey of a relatable young woman who comes into her own as she determines what she needs to be happy.

This book is not the genre I would typically read, nonetheless it was good to venture out of my comfort zone of what I would typically read. I may have done a lot of blushing and my eyebrows may have spent the better part of reading raised, in spite of that, I enjoyed the book.

Henry Winkler is Back and Is Writing Book, HAAAAAYYYY! The Ghost Buddy Series

August 24, 2012 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

When I was a kid, the Fonz was a character we all knew. He was cool. You did not mess with the Fonz. I have fond memories of Happy Days as a kid and still enjoy seeing Henry Winkler on T.V. He was recently on an episode of Anderson Cooper, where Anderson revealed he was obsessed with the Fonz as a kid—so much so, he went as Fonzie several Halloween’s.

Did you know that Henry Winkler has also written 20 books? I did not either! When I was contacted by Scholastic to review the latest series, “Ghost Buddy,” I was simply delighted. The story is co-written by Lin Oliver and so far, there are two books in the series, “Zero to Hero,” and the latest “Mind If I Read Your Mind.”

Allie and I started reading the book together today and she is thrilled to find out more about Billy Broccoli, the boy who befriends the ghost Hoover Porterhouse. Hoove comes up with a plan to help Billy get revenge on the school bully. Hoove is a funny teenage ghost, with a major attitude.

Watch the trailer for the book:

The Chaparone

July 29, 2012 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

The Chaparone by Laura Moriarty

One of this month’s BlogHer Book Club reads was “The Chaperone” by Laura Moriarty. The book is a historical fiction novel about the life of Louise Brooks, a 1920’s silent film star and her chaperone to New York City. I was not familiar with Louise Brooks prior to reading the story, so I saw Louise with fresh eyes. After reading the book, I did some research of my own. She was a beautiful, headstrong, flapper and bad girl in real life.

This story, however, while highlighting some of Louise’s naughty behavior, was really about Cora, Louise’s 36 year old chaperone to New York City. Louise went to New York to audition for the Denishawn Dance Company and Cora was tasked with keeping headstrong Louise safe in the Big Apple. The trip proves to be a turning point in the life of Cora, where her world views change and she finds herself, with the help of 16 year old Louise’s antics and circumstance.

The book did not grip me initially. It was full of details and brought us back in forth, from future, past, and to present. This technique is not one of my favorite writing styles. Nonetheless, once I got further on into the book, I was fully in the grasp of this author and could not put the book down. I ended up finishing the book in one sitting. The author did an amazing job of describing historical landmarks, events, and people, while remaining true to genuine history.

2020 was weird. There were good times and bad. I'm 2020 was weird. There were good times and bad. I'm glad that we made it through. I am looking forward to starting fresh in 2021. I have a lot of #goals for #2021. Many are recycled from last year's #visionboard, but that's okay. I have my canceled #marathon coming up in May. I'll finally apply to #lawschool and follow my dreams, wherever they take me. Happy new year!

For Christmas, hubby's car needed to be replaced. We bought a #minicooper last week and he's over the moon. The green is amazing! I love how it stands out! He met me at the finish to drive me back to the start. What a fun car!

Time is doing things to my face, and that's okay. Time is doing things to my face, and that's okay. I finally got my hair done for the first time in 2020. I had previously got a covid cut in the backyard several months back, but this was the first time having a professional do my hair ALL. YEAR. I felt so good, I came home and put my pajamas on. 😂 It's been a really hard year, but I have grown so much this year and I'm not just talking about my pants size. 😂 Life is good.

More than a quarter of a century ago, Eric asked me on a date and took me to the restaurant on the end of this pier. As it happened, my mom ended up joining us. This was a fortuitous twist, as Eric forgot his wallet, and I didn't have any money, as a starving college student.

I started my 5 mile run at that same pier. I smiled to myself, remembering simpler times that, at the time, didn't seem so simple. I breathed in the fresh air and hung on to these memories. I am so grateful for the blind date that worked out to be our love story.

It's beginning to look more like Christmas and my running soul is enjoying every single sighting of Christmas joy. It seems like there's a lot of people that are hurting right now, in the community. We're going to have to work together to spread joy this year and help fill those needs that families have this year. How can I be of service today?
