Fitness Friday 40 Plus Pounds Down!

March 26, 2016 by Laura Lohr 4 Comments

Before and After March 2016

I’m down more than 40 pounds from my starting weight in Novemeber. Sometimes, it’s closer to 45 pounds, but the scale keeps bouncing up and down, making me absolutely insane lately. I am trying to give myself a break. I’ve worked hard and I’ve seen lots of progress. I’m going to pause and reflect. While I’ve lost a lot of weight and I’m happy about that, I’m more than a number on the scale. I’ve realized that losing weight isn’t solve all my problems. Feelings and fears about being good enough, from so long ago, have bubbled to the surface. I’ve had to fight those fears and sometimes the feelings are difficult.

If there was anything I would tell Little Laura, my little girl self, it would be, “You are enough! You’re smart enough, you’re pretty enough, you’re loved, and you are worthy!” As a young person, especially in my young adult years, I searched aimlessly to figure out what I needed to be worthy of love. I think it would surprise some, at how insecure I really was. I tended to overcompensate with an overinflated ego, in an attempt to cover up how small and insignificant I felt. I wasn’t thin enough. I was smart, I knew, but I wasn’t as smart as my peers. I wasn’t sure I was loveable and my atrocious behavior didn’t help my cause, at times.

As a grown up, in my 40’s, I realize that I’ve held on to so many of those beliefs. I’m never thin enough, smart enough, talented enough, pretty enough, etc., etc., etc. I am celebrating losing more than 40 pounds since Thanksgiving and it is occurring to me how much of those things I told myself in my 20’s that I still believe. That is something I’ve come to realize, is holding me back from taking risks. I have a habit of believing the old stories I have played over and over in my head, instead of creating new stories—stories that are kinder and gentler—ones that have much happier endings.

So, today, as I look at my before and after pictures, I’m going to be kind. Even at my bigger size, I was just as worthy of love and kindness as I am today.

Running is going so well! I couldn’t be any happier! I have gotten faster and I’m enjoying it so much more! I’ve been running with the Temecula chapter of Moms Run This Town, a running group that is just outstanding! I’ve run a few times every week with either the Temecula chapter or the San Diego chapter. I’m making friends. I’m challenging myself, and I’m getting stronger! I love running right now! I’ve been getting up at 4 and 5 in the morning to make some of the meetups. This weekend, I’m going to tackle the Torrey Pines hill, in preparation of the the La Jolla Half, that is coming up in just one month! This is my second to last run before I start to taper.

My weight loss has been extremely slow and I have times when I get very discouraged. I know I’m putting my all into and I’m getting tons of support at Lindora. It’s just that my body has begun to get very resistant to any weight loss. I was reminded by one of the nurses that when your body is used to a certain weight for so long, it becomes very stubborn to shed those unwanted pounds. I don’t understand the science behind it, I just know that I haven’t been this weight in at least 6 years. I believe it has been much longer than that. I imagine my body is in shock, shedding so much weight, in a few months, really!

Today, I’m going to work hard on my fitness. I’m going to give it my all in all ways in my diet. I’m going to give myself a break, because I’m beginning to see that I’m worthy. I don’t have to beat myself up. I’m doing the best I can and that’s all I can ask of myself. In all honesty, I’ve seen so much growth in all aspects of my life. For the first time in my life, I am happy with who I am—flaws and all!

Disclosure: I have been offered a 10 weeks with Lindora, in exchange for sharing my personal opinions and experiences with Lindora. All opinions are my own. I only share information about products, companies, and services I believe will be helpful for my readers. I’m losing weight and following the plan on Lindora and loving it!

Fitness Friday SuperBowl Edition

FitnessFriday

FitnessFridayHappy Fitness Friday! I’m so happy to be here this week! It was a fantastic week! I have so much to look forward to this weekend and next week!

Sunset_Cliffs2
Sunset Cliffs, where Mr. Bear and I got married.

First of all, we are traveling to Monterrey today to visit my mother in law and my husband’s uncle. His uncle is giving us TWO SUPERBOWL TICKETS! How lucky are we? I’m so excited! I gave up my seat for my ten year old daughter. She is a loyal Broncos fan and I know this is the chance of a lifetime for her. So, her and Daddy are going to have a NFL experience most people don’t get in their lifetimes! I’m sad I’m going to miss it, yet I know how much it will mean to my husband and daughter to spend this special day together. What an experience!

Because it’s Superbowl and because I just completed my first program with Lindora, I’m going to take this opportunity to enjoy myself while we’re traveling. I may splurge on some football goodness while we are away. I mean, for me, my favorite part of Superbowl really is the food! Hahaha! Excuse me, while I enjoy a thing or two. Then, come Monday, it’s back to program for another 10 weeks! I’m so delighted that I’ve got another program to start!

My goal on this next 10 week program is 35 pounds. I’d love to see another 35 pounds gone! That would take me so close to my goal. I’m going to stick very close to the rules this time around, just like I did last time. This last time, I lost 32.5 pounds, when I was at my lowest during the 10 weeks. I’m confident, however much weight I lose, I’ll be happy! This has been such a rewarding experience!

I went to the spot Mr. Bear and I got married yesterday. I was just thinking about how beautiful and confident I felt walking down the aisle, down to the ocean, at Sunset Cliffs. I want to feel that same confidence again!

Sunset_Cliffs1
Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. Where I married my best friend!

This past week, I’ve seen myself grow so much as a runner. I’m not just running faster, I’m running longer distances without stopping. The La Jolla Half Marathon is a hilly race. There’s one hill, specifically, at mile 6 that really is steep! The race really is infamous for that one steep hill that makes even the most fit of runners question their sanity! The elevation goes from sea level to 440 feet in the matter of two miles. Then, at the end, there’s another small hill before you finish the race. The great thing about the race, is that the course is absolutely stunning! The steep incline winds between the Torrey Pine trees and much of the course yaws along one of the most scenic areas along the Pacific Ocean.

ljhm-course-map,-photo

I’ve run through this area before and it’s a favorite for its majestic beauty. The La Jolla Half is the only race I’ve ever received a Do Not Finish for. It was approximately 4 years ago and I only got about 4 miles in before injury, anxiety, and lack of training took me out of the race. It’s a huge milestone to be tackling this race again. I’m really excited about slaying this dragon of mine.

My friend Mollie and I have been running with my dog Layla at 5:30 a.m. during the week, whenever we can. We are tackling the hills that envelop our neighborhood. I’ll admit, it’s quite intimidating when I think about the hills we’re going to run, so I don’t think about them much! I put my headphones on, try to control my breathing and then I try to keep up with Mollie! She’s a lot faster than me and sometimes I feel like I’m holding her back. Nonetheless, like a great friend, she nevers makes me feel that way. She encourages me and cheers me on. In spite of the daunting paths that lie ahead of us, I feel inspired. It’s giving me a lot of confidence I haven’t had in a long time!

Tomorrow, I’m going to run in Monterrey and get 7 miles in. I can’t believe I’m already up to 7 miles for this training schedule! Amazing! I’m sticking to my goals and making real changes!

My dear readers, have you stuck to your New Year’s Resolutions? Have you made a change you’re proud of? Share what you’re proud of!

Happy running! Have a safe Super Bowl weekend!

10 Weeks with Lindora

January 27, 2016 by Laura Lohr 12 Comments

Weight Loss Lindora
This is my before and after 9 weeks photo. I’ve got a long way to go, but Lindora has given me such an amazing start! I can’t wait to see my next photo!

I can’t believe it, but my first 10 weeks with Lindora are coming to a close! I’ve managed to lose 31 pounds since my first consultation with Lindora and 28 pounds since I started following the Lindora plan. A solid 30 pounds of weight loss in less than 10 weeks! I want to take a moment and talk about my experience so far with Lindora. I’ve been asked a lot of questions from friends and family, so I thought, what better place to answer them, than here, on my blog.

What Exactly is Lindora?

Lindora is a medically supervised weight loss program. It is comprised of one-on-one clinical visits with a medical professional, to help guide you through the process. I went five days a week and brought my food journal with me. The better I journaled, the better the staff could help me. They congratulated me on every pound lost, even if it was the same pound I had previously lost and gained. They had tips and helpful hints to getting me through every step of the journey. They answered all my questions. The BEST part? They had all been through the program themselves and knew what I was experiencing! I couldn’t have done it without the helpful staff at the Temecula Lindora clinic!

What Do You Eat? Do You Have to Buy Their Food?

I got asked many times, throughout my program, if Lindora was one of those programs where you HAVE to buy their food. The answer is, no. Lindora does sell their own foods—which are delicious and convenient, by the way. You could EASILY work the program with food purchased at the local grocery store and you can most certainly eat out at restaurants—they’ll show you how! When I first started, I had no intentions of ever purchasing any of the food Lindora sells. However, what I found was, some of my unhealthy eating habits were because I wasn’t prepared for all situations. I soon began to purchase protein bars and shakes to keep on hand, especially when we were traveling. It was so helpful to grab a bar, before I was feeling HANGRY (hungry and angry), and before I yelled at my loved ones.

The answer is, nevertheless, that you could follow Lindora’s Lean for Life Plan and not ever purchase any of the food. There’s plenty to eat on the plan, that kept me satisfied. Lindora has a food concierge that prepares fresh and delicious meals for purchase—real food!  At the same time, it is simple to follow the plan and not buy any of the Lindora products, if you don’t choose to.

Was it Difficult?

I’ve been trying to do this weight loss thing for a long time. This is the first time I can truly say that it wasn’t THAT bad. I mean, depriving myself of the comfort foods I love, such as butter drenched mashed potatoes and stuffing at Thanksgiving—Yeah. That was difficult to turn down. Honestly, it was really easy to stay on track, because I knew I’d be accountable to my friends at Lindora the following day. Was it difficult? Sure. Everything worthwhile is difficult to some degree. Yet, it didn’t feel so difficult, because I had the help and support of the Lindora staff.

Is it Another Fad Diet?

No. Lindora has been around for over 40 years. They have learned how to properly customize their program for each of their clients. They customized my program, especially for me and my food preferences. Do I have to drink milk if I don’t like it? Nope. They guided me through every single step and made it fit for me.

You Go Everyday? What Do You Do at Your Appointments?

I have been going to Lindora 5 days a week. The first thing I do, is check in and then check the keto sticks. Keto sticks are meant to check if I’m in fat-burning mode, or ketosis. Next, I go into a private room with my nurse. She goes over my daily action plan—or food journal from the previous day and weighs me in. If I’m in ketosis and my weight is down, we talk about what worked. If I’m not in ketosis, and/or my weight is up, we talk about what might not be working, or discuss what may be happening with my body. I found this part of the process so invaluable! It was great to get another perspective, from a knowledgeable, objective professional.

Every two weeks, we did measurements. Every so often (I’m not sure how often. Once a week?) they check my blood pressure. Every step of the way, my health and safety is paramount to my program. I always feel like I’m in the best hands.

What happens When You’re Done Losing Weight?

It’s not called the Lean for Life program for nothing! The program has a maintenance component at the end of the first 8 weeks. During Maintenance, the plan reintroduces foods back into your diet that were excluded during the weight loss phase. This is to slowly transition you back to healthy eating that can be maintained for life. If you’re not done losing, you return to the program after the Maintenance phase. If you’re done losing, Lindora doesn’t leave you high and dry after the program ends. You’re still able to continue Maintenance with the clinic, at no cost to you.

What’s Next for Me? Am I Done?

This is the lowest weight I’ve been at in more than 5 years, nonetheless, I’ve still got 70 more pounds to lose. That’s a lot! I plan to continue with Lindora, until I reach my goal. This is the first program, diet, regimen that has worked for me in many, many years. This is the first time in many years that I’m optimistic about reaching my weight loss goal. I couldn’t have got here without the help, encouragement, and support I’ve received from Lindora. My family and friends have been so supportive and so excited for me. I just want to continue on! I know that I’ll met my goal. That’s the sort of optimism I’ve not had in a long time!

Disclosure: I have been offered a 10 weeks with Lindora, in exchange for sharing my personal opinions and experiences with Lindora. All opinions are my own. Fitness Friday 30 Pounds Gone! Addition

January 22, 2016 by Laura Lohr 4 Comments

#FitnessFriday

Heeeelllllooo Fitness Friday! I am so excited about my Fitness Friday post today! First things, first! I ran the Carlsbad Half Marathon on Sunday (Race report coming early next week! Stay tuned!) and broke my long streak of not running. I’m finally bad to running and feeling fantastic about it! I’ve run two training runs since the half. I’m now on my way to training for the La Jolla Half in March. I’ve come a long way, from barely being able to run in January 2015.

FinisherMedalCarlsbad2

My friend and I started running at 5:30 a.m. this week, in preparation of the La Jolla Half. She’s much faster than me, but we’re making it work. We’re running the hills around our neighborhood and I’m feeling stronger already. The thing about the La Jolla Half, is that it’s really hilly. In March of 2009, I attempted the La Jolla Half and had to drop out of the race about 3 miles in. That following August, I completed the AFC Half, but the La Jolla Half DNF always haunts me. This year, my plan is to tackle the La Jolla Half and make it my bitch!

My second hooray of the day is that I’ve hit 30 pounds of weight loss. I cannot believe it! It’s fantastic! I LOVE Lindora! They’ve done so much to help me be successful and I’ve not seen numbers this low on the scale in 4 or more years. That’s amazing! I know I will always get the support I need when I go in for my visits. They help me identify what I’m doing right and what I might need to change to be successful. I have gained so much confidence. I feel so good! I am wearing clothes I haven’t worn in years and fitting nicely in clothes I’ve been wearing that were ill-fitting. It’s such a great feeling and I’m so grateful for discovering Lindora. The methods I was using before just weren’t working and I’d all but given up. I had really resigned myself to my weight, until I got acquainted with the program.

Today, I’m excited about my fitness level. I’m excited about running. I’m excited about my health. I recently went to see my doctor and found that my lab work was all improved from the previous year. Losing more than 10% of my body weight was enough to send my bad cholesterol and good cholesterol in the right directions, my triglycerides are down, and everything is well-within normal limits. My already low blood pressure has also gone even lower!

I’m so thankful to have such progress and I’m so grateful to have my life back!

What are YOU grateful for this week?

Have a great weekend!

Happy Running!

Fitness Friday New Year 2016 Edition

January 8, 2016 by Laura Lohr 2 Comments

FitnessFriday

Fitness&HealthFriday

Welcome to the 2016 Fitness Friday! This has been such an exciting month! We had a busy month, yet it was very exciting! I got sick halfway through December, which put a huge damper on things. I had to fake it when I was feeling awful, however I eventually felt better and had no regrets. We went on vacation over Christmas, which should have made my diet and exercise a challenge. It really didn’t. I’ve been so committed to losing weight and getting healthy, I was able to overcome anything that looked like an obstacle! I just completed the 6th week on Lindora* and things are looking really good!

Here’s my stats, as of Friday—-DRUM ROLL PLEASE….

Total weight lost since my first weigh in: 24.5 pounds!

Total weight lost since starting Lindora: 21.5 pounds!

I cannot believe how great I feel! I’m wearing clothes I haven’t worn in YEARS! It’s a fantastic feeling!

For Christmas, we went to Sedona and Grand Canyon. While we were there, we did some hiking, took lots of walks, and of course, did the Pink Jeep Tour.

We went hiking on the Boynton Canyon Trail and saw amazing panoramic views. We went to the Chapel of the Holy Cross and saw more amazing views :

So, as you can see, Christmas break was no joke for us! We stayed active, exploring Arizona’s majestic landscape! It was so beautiful and such a peaceful way to celebrate our Christmas, as a family. Mr. Bear and I went to Sedona the Christmas before Allie was born. We had such great memories of our trip this was a different experience, to go as a family, rather than a couple, yet no less special the first time or this time. We have so many cherished memories and Allie was old enough to really appreciate it this time.

The Carlsbad Half Marathon is coming soon and I’m really getting nervous! I was sick for two weeks and didn’t run for two weeks. I only have two weeks or training left and I’m second-guessing myself, whether I’m ready for this. I’ve come such a long, long way from where I came from, the beginning of January 2015—when I couldn’t run a full mile without stopping. I’ve dropped more than 10% of my body weight, which makes it so much easier to run. I’m not dragging extra weight when I run. I don’t expect to run very fast—or, even to run the whole half marathon, nevertheless, it’s a start!

My goal is to complete the Triple Crown Half Marathon Series this year. This consists of three of San Diego’s most popular race courses: Carlsbad Half Marathon, La Jolla Half Marathon, and America’s Finest City Half Marathon (AFC). I’ve run the AFC a number of times through the years. In fact, the AFC 5k was my first 5k race I ever did and then I was HOOKED on running races! I know that the more I run, the better shape I’ll be in. I’m really excited about this year!

What did you do to stay healthy during the holidays? What goals do you have for 2016? What are YOU excited about in 2016?

Happy New Year from me to you!

More than a quarter of a century ago, Eric asked me on a date and took me to the restaurant on the end of this pier. As it happened, my mom ended up joining us. I started my 5 mile run at that same pier. I smiled to myself, remembering simpler times that, at the time, didn't seem so simple. I breathed in the fresh air and hung on to these memories. I am so grateful for the blind date that worked out to be our love story.
