DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom: Review

April 21, 2015 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

I was invited to see DisneyNature’s Monkey Kingdom at the local theater. All opinions are mine alone.

Back in August, we saw Island of Lemurs: Madagascar in the theater and I loved it! I love monkeys and find them so interesting! I also love the Disney Earth and Disney Nature series as well. So, when we were invited to see DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom, narrated by Tina Fey, we were there!

monkeykingdom552f19274efaf

The thing I loved the most about DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom, was that this wasn’t just a documentary, this was a love story. It was the story of the underdog, overcoming all odds and triumphing over the hierarchy within the animal kingdom. Our heroine, Maya, is a clever monkey, born into the lower ranks of a macaque monkey family in South Asia. When Maya gives birth to her son Kip, however, she doesn’t sit back and idly, she takes big risks to secure a better life for her newborn son. It’s a touching story that left me grabbing tissues.

monkeykingdom552f190f115a1

Monkey Kingdom has a great cast of characters and is quite an adventure! The macaque family lives at a place called, Castle Rock, which suits them just fine, until a neighboring family of monkeys takes over Castle Rock and leaves them no place to go. Maya and her mate, Kumar, spring into action and lead the family of monkeys on a laughable adventure that is sure to bring smiles.

With nowhere to go, the macaque family move in to the nearby village to forge for food. The resourceful monkeys get into all kinds of mischief and meet all sorts of unlikely friends. The family puts their very entrenched hierarchical order aside and give Maya the opportunity to shine in unfamiliar surroundings. The macaque family, with Kumar and Maya in leading the charge, reclaim Castle Rock—improving Kumar and Maya’s social status within the family.

You’ll find yourself cheering for Maya, as her she attempts to give Kip a better life. It really is a heartwarming story!

MONKEY KINGDOM is in theaters everywhere starting Friday, April 17th!

Cell Phone Safety for Kids

KeepingKidsSafe550

The invention of mobile data is probably one of the the most amazing as a parent! I still remember the first time we got smart phones, so many years ago, that we could use the internet ANYWHERE! Wooohooo! Times have definitely changed, now that we’re parents and cell phone safety for kids has risen to the top of our priority list.

Since my nine year old started becoming more independent, like going to horseback riding camp, joining swim team, and just for convenience, we’ve added her to our cell phone plan. She’s still using a basic phone, but the conversations have begun, “Mom, when can I get a phone like yours?” I’m so not ready for that! Adding data to her phone is something we’re not ready for! I believe it’s a personal choice when parents decide when their child is ready for a cell phone and whether it’s a basic or smart phone. The good news is, when we are ready, we know that we have tools and resources for keeping her data usage in check and make sure she’s using her phone responsibly.

Tips for keeping kids safe with cell phones:

There’s an app for that:

There’s so many applications out there that can give parents control over their child’s cell phone. From GPS software that can keep parents apprised of where their child/teen is, apps that limit the time spent playing games, to blocking applications such as Facebook, Instagram, or SnapChat, there is an application that can give parents what they need to keep their kids safe. Often times, the parental control applications may be included by the cell phone provider for free or for a nominal fee. Some apps that may be of help to parents: Phone Sheriff, My Mobile Watchdog, Funamo, and kidsafe web browse Mobicip. Check the phone settings for pre-installed features and apps that may come standard from your wireless carrier.

Pay Attention to Screen Time:

It’s so very important to monitor how much time your teen/tween is spending texting, game play, social media, and who our children are talking to. Mobistealth is application that parents use to monitor a teen/tweens activities on their cell phone—check text messages, check pictures sent/received, tracks websites visited, and more. Children Tracker, an Android app, is very similar to Mobistealth and safes the data in the cloud on Google.

Talk About Phone ,and Internet Safety with Kids:

Keeping the conversation with kids going about being safe online and with a cell phone can be an important preventative measure to keep kids safe. Talk to kids about the dangers of strangers online and talk about issues such as Cyberbullying. We all hope our children aren’t faced with dangerous situations, however, in the event they are faced with difficult circumstances, they’ll be prepared. Let kids know what they should do if they are ever in danger. It is crucial to give kids tools in advance, so they know how to keep themselves safe.

Our Love for Brad Lives On

November 17, 2014 by Laura Lohr 8 Comments

Denise and Brad on their wedding day in Kona, Hawaii.
Denise and Brad on their wedding day in Kona, Hawaii.

November 1, 2014 should have been the celebration of the 3 month anniversary of my sister’s marriage to her husband and soul mate, Bradley Hayes. Instead, November 10, was the one month anniversary of his brutal murder. When I type that out, my mouth still goes agape, in disbelief. Not only did he die, far too young, he was senselessly murdered. A full month later, the reality of what happened to our family—what happened to Brad’s family—still hasn’t sunken in. Not an hour goes by, without the pain in my heart of what three sick, demented people have done, for reasons we still aren’t completely apprised of, but can only be described as SENSELESS, SELFISH and motivated by robbery.

Honeymoon in Hawaii, August 2014.

We met Brad nearly six years ago, when my sister was 32. From the moment Mr. Bear and I met him, he was fun to be around, easy to talk to and profoundly likeable. He was spontaneous and made even the most mundane of tasks an adventure. It didn’t take long for Brad to fit right in with our family. We spent summers and holidays together, with Brad’s two children: Halloween trick-or-treating, fishing at the nearby lake, Oktoberfest in Anaheim, Disneyland, visits from Easter Bunny, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.

Denise and Brad would often stay at our home in San Diego, where we would have picnics on the beach, or take the kids to the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Belmont Park or some other exciting adventure. From nearly the first moment they met, Allison considered Brad’s two girls to be her cousins, even though it was years later that Brad and Denise tied the knot, making it official. These girls were my nieces from the start and always will be.

All our family together before my nephew went to lineman school, like Brad had done. Brad had given my nephew a lot of good advice and my nephew went to school to follow Brad’s path as a lineman. This was our “going away” breakfast for my nephew.

Brad and his children happily adopted our family tradition of going to Knott’s Berry Farm every fall during the holidays—a tradition that is 30 years strong for our family. Many happy memories were created there, where we rode rides, carefully chose personalized holiday ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree, and where the guys (my dad, Brad, my husband, my brother and occasionally our family friend, Steve) would peel off and head for the fast rides and the girls (my mom, my sister, my sister-in-law, Brad’s mom Rhonda and I) would head to Camp Snoopy for the kiddie rides for the younger girls. It was a place where memories were created and where family connections were reinforced. As we approach the holiday season, a feeling of emptiness overwhelms my heart. Our family will never be the same again, after this tragic act of cowardice that stole a beautiful soul from our family.

November 19 will be another court date and another hearing for the murderers—just one more court appearance that will, hopefully, result in justice for Brad. Losing a loved one is difficult, however, it is compounded exponentially when the loved one is brutally murdered. People ask me all the time lately, “How is your sister?” It has been a challenging question to answer. I pause to answer because I don’t know how she is. How is a person that loses the love of her life to a brutal murder? I know she’s a strong person. I know she is very strong. Nevertheless, the course of her life has been forever altered by this event. She wasn’t supposed to spend holidays without Brad. She wasn’t supposed to be contacting the District Attorney to find out details of the murder case of her husband. She wasn’t supposed to be using her vacation time from work to attend the murder trial. They were supposed to be honeymooners. They were supposed to grow old together. She wasn’t supposed to have to be strong by herself. Brad was supposed to be by her side. I don’t know. How is my sister? Time will tell. All we can do, is be here for her when she needs us, but we can’t unbreak her broken heart.

Denise and Brad at my brother’s wedding reception.

Brad was a hard worker and always helping others. He was a veteran of the National Guard and worked as a lineman on power lines. He would offer to help whenever there was work to be done. He would often tell my dad, “I can help you with that!” whenever there was a project that needed to be completed. He would often give money to the homeless and was always thinking of others. Brad was staying at an RV park, while he was working 2 hours from home the week before he was murdered. It was this RV park, where the news media reported he was “camping”. He often stayed at RV parks when he was called to work far away from home.  It was his spirit of giving that ultimately cost him his life. The people that murdered him didn’t have a place to stay and Brad had offered to let them stay in Denise and Brad’s RV.

He had cashed his payroll check the evening prior to the murder and now, that money has disappeared. It is unconscionable that he may have been murdered for a few thousand dollars. You can read some of the details here. The murderers claimed Brad kidnapped them. In actuality, he had opened his RV to them, out of kindness.

Brad is survived by his wife (my sister) Denise, three children and a granddaughter. Last Tuesday, Brad’s newest niece, Scotlyn Bradley was born. We have set up a fund on GoFundMe.com to assist the family that Brad leaves behind. There are many unexpected expenses that have resulted from this unforeseen tragedy.  The trial will likely go on for years. Denise is going to need a lot of support—financially and emotionally. If you find it in your heart to help, it is greatly appreciated. You can donate to the Bradley Hayes Memorial fund at GoFundMe.com.

Brad, doing the job he loved to do.

I am closing this post with a picture of Brad being active and doing the job he loved to do. He was kind, fun, adventurous. He was a good husband and father. He was a good friend and a good soul. He was all those things. This tragedy doesn’t take any of that away. Brad, you are loved and you are missed.

Disney’s Frozen—My Favorite Disney Movie EVER!

December 2, 2013 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Frozen Olaf
Meet Olaf from Frozen. He was one of my very favorite characters.

We had the opportunity to screen Disney’s Frozen in theaters a few weeks ago.  I have to say that I loved, loved, loved this movie!  It was the cutest movie we’ve seen all year and I cried like a baby.  It is a great family movie and it was perfect for kids Allie’s age (she is 8).

Here’s a clip from the movie:

Verizon Jetpack MiFi® 4620LE

When Verizon offered to send us the Verizon Jetpack Mifi device, I was ecstatic! We have considered getting the device previously, as there are often times when Mr. Bear is on call and needs to login to the system at work. There are often times when it would be convenient to have the device with us on the road. [Read more…]
