6th Annual Battle of the Badges: Lindora Lean for Life

November 9, 2015 by Laura Lohr 2 Comments

DSC_8488I’ve been hearing the commercials for Lindora on KFI, a radio station in southern California for many years now. The program has been endorsed by one of my favorite radio personalities, Bill Handel, who has personally used the Lindora weight loss program. The other day, I had the opportunity to get to know a little bit more about Lindora, at the Battle of the Badges finale, that took place at the Norco state prison.

Winners

BeforeAndAfter

The Battle of the Badges is a yearly competition that is hosted by Lindora to help bring awareness about obesity and heart disease among prison guards—a problem that afflicts prison guards so profoundly that according to a 40 year study, 4 out of 5  law enforcement are overweight and 50% will die of cardiovascular disease within 5 years of retirement. The statistics are staggering!

The winner of the most pounds lost—a whopping 59.3 pounds in 10 weeks! Congratulations, William Beauchemin!

Thursday, 26 competitors, including California Corrections officers and San Bernardino Sheriff’s deputies revealed their 10 week results after following the diet and lifestyle regimen by Lindora, which is highlighted in the book, “The New Lean for Life.” Ten weeks ago, California prison guards from the Norco State Prison faced off against the San Bernardino Sheriff deputies  in a battle to lose the most weight. The results? They were absolutely amazing! Here are just a few of the accomplishments in just 10 short weeks:

  • 20 participants lost a combined total of 829.7 lbs — an average weight loss of 41.5 lbs per participant.
  • 17 of the 20 participants lost 30+ lbs, 12 lost 40+ lbs and 4 lost 50+ lbs.
  • Participants had an average BMI of 38.6 at the start of the competition – now it’s 32.5
  • Participants lost a combined total of 109.4 inches in their waist—an average of 5.5 inches each

Each of the participants came out, holding their “before” photos and when the photos were dropped, their dramatic results were undeniably amazing!

…And the Winner Is?

Winner

The California Department of Corrections officers took away the trophy, with a total weight loss of 556 pounds! WOW! Bill Beauchemin was the most victorious of all the competitors, losing a total of 59 pounds! Outstanding results! Even the prison’s warden, Cynthia Tampkins participated in the competition and lost weight! All the participants were truly winners, accomplishing much in the fight against obesity.

The competition costs were covered by the Lean for Life Foundation, which provides weight loss support to those who are unable to afford it, as well as providing research and, community education and outreach. It’s a great program and they’ve been supporting the Battle of the Badges competition for 6 years.

I spoke with a few of the participants of the Battle of the Badges. The feedback I received from them was that it was a simple program to follow and they loved the support they got from the Lindora staff.

Lunch

The Lindora staff and CEO were on hand to answer questions and to celebrate the success of the participants, during the Lindora inspired lunch that followed. I had an opportunity to try it and it was tasty! Lunch consisted of an oriental salad with chicken breast and orange slices, beef Colorado, chicken parmesan, squash, and chicken florentine sausage.

BattleOfTheBadges

I learned a lot about Lindora and I’m excited to say that I’m going to start this week! I’m super excited about the program and the support they offer. It was amazing to see first hand what the program can do. I can’t wait to see my ten week results!

Disclosure: I have been offered a 10 weeks with Lindora, in exchange for sharing my personal opinions and experiences with Lindora. All opinions are my own. I only share information about products, companies, and services I believe will be helpful for my readers.

Fitness and Health Friday—That Time When Jillian Michaels Kicked My Butt

February 20, 2015 by Laura Lohr 5 Comments

JillianQA5BrightWelcome to the third addition of Fitness and Health Friday! Happy Friday, indeed! Wow! I can’t believe it’s Friday already! What a week—or two! I’m finally on the mend after being sick for nearly 2 1/2 weeks. I’m almost fully recovered, after coming down with strep, then strep in my eye, then a crazy cold. It seems like every time I start a new exercise program, my immune system takes a bit of a hit.

Enough of that though! I’m all better now and all fired up! I went to TheFitExpo in Los Angeles two weeks ago and had such a blast! Not only did I meet other FitFluential Ambassadors, I got to workout out with Jillian Michaels, I got to wander around the expo, and I got completely inspired by the whole experience!

Saturday afternoon, Jillian Michaels did a question and answer session, where she answered questions from the audience. She is so passionate about fitness and health. My respect for her grew ten-fold hearing her speak. When asked about having, “cheat days,” she said she doesn’t believe in them. Instead, she explained that if she wants something special, she eats it, then she makes up for it later. She shared her experiences being a chubby kid and I just loved how her experiences have shaped her attitudes and approach with fitness.  She’s super sassy and I just love her!

This week has been somewhat of a wash in the fitness and healthy living department. I did get one really good workout at the conference though. I was able to get in on the Body Shred workout with Jillian Michaels and she kicked my butt! It was only a 30 minute workout, but OH MY GEEZ! I thought I might pass out! This workout is not for the faint of heart.

This is me after the Body Shred class. Still excited, still happy. Just sore.

My favorite part of the workout, was when we were doing punches—left, right, left, right. I was sort of wimping out and taking it easy, instead of giving my all, like I should have. I think I thought maybe Jillian wasn’t noticing. The next thing I knew, she was leaning in towards me from the stage, yelling, “PUNCH, PUNCH! GET THAT AGGRESSION OUT! DO IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT!” She is pretty awesome and I absolutely adore her, but I have to be honest, she’s super intense! I started punching like I meant it and from there on out, I was giving my all. There was another time she was shouting commands in my general direction, but I was so lightheaded, being starstruck faded and all I could do was MOVE IT. I might have been a little afraid. 🙂

This is during the Body Shred class, in the very beginning. What an awesome experience!

I’d been working out at boot camp for an hour a day, five days a week, and it was nothing compared to the Body Shred workout. I was so sore for days after I did the workout. I have a friend in Pennsylvania that is a certified Body Shred trainer and she warned that it was an intense workout. I had no idea!

I stopped off at the Body Shred booth at the expo and got my friend this cute tank. She chose the one on the right I love the grey and orange! So cute!

The clothing line is so cute!

I had such a blast! On the weight loss front, I struggled. I gained 2 pounds. I know where I made the mistakes and what I could improve. I am also forgiving myself because I was traveling and because being sick was not helpful to good food choices. I am completely ready to put the mistakes of the past behind me and move forward. I’m so motivated after the expo! I’m ready to kick some butt!

How was your week? What changes will you make next week? What did you do this week that you are proud?

A New Year 2014. A Different Perspective.

January 7, 2014 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Sunset
This beautiful view makes me happy. It’s from our bedroom window.

It was a busy year.  It was an eventful year.  I welcome the new year 2014, with open arms.   2013 was a year where what we knew was flipped upside-down.  We have loved.  We have lived.  We have learned.  We have lost.  We starred evil right in its scary face.  Some of 2013 was wonderful and I am grateful for that.  Some of it has been painful and I guess some of that I am grateful for too.  I truly believe that although I never welcome the painful moments, there is something we learn when we walk through those dark times.  I have to admit that I still don’t know what those lessons are and what I need to learn.  We have gained some wisdom through some of it—that I know.   I contend that there is a purpose and I have to accept that there really is a purpose for everything—-even when I don’t understand or see that purpose fully.  There have been lots of prayers and that will continue.  2013 wasn’t an easy year for us and we have to have faith that things will work themselves out.  God willing, they will.

One of my very favorite photos of Mr. Bear and I in 2013.
One of my very favorite photos of Mr. Bear and I in 2013.

Today was my first workout of the year.  I am training for my first half marathon in a long time.  I have my sights set on the La Jolla Half Marathon.  It is one of the prettiest courses here in San Diego.  I am also doing a sit-up and push-up challenge with my good friends.  Tonight I did my first thirty minutes on the treadmill, while watching my guilty pleasure, “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix.  Then, I followed it up with 10 girly push-ups and 30 full sit-ups.  My goal is to be able to do 100 sit-ups and 50 push-ups a night, without any trouble by the half marathon.  I am so out of shape, however, what I don’t have in strength and endurance, I have in passion to get my girlish figure back.

I also re-started eating vegan/vegetarian.  I feel so much better when I cut out processed foods and eat my fruits and vegetables.  I am terrible about eating breakfast and lunch.  That is one of my goals—to do a better job with having meals and snacks—not skipping meals.  My eating habits have gotten so bad over the past year and my waistline has really showed it. Bleh.  I want to make that change and I want to make it a lifestyle change, not just a diet.  My two best friends and I did 6 weeks of vegan/vegetarian lifestyle before we all went to Las Vegas (Which was a fantastic adventure that I wish I had blogged about!  It was so much fun!).  We all lost weight.  We all got in better shape.  Then, the holidays came and we all dropped the ball.  It’s awesome to have good friends with the same goal.  We’ve been supporting each other and that accountability has been so incredibly helpful.

Allie is so grown up these days! She turned 8 in November.  She has been on the local swim team since July and she’s becoming such a good little swimmer.  She had her first swim meet in November.  She did pretty well, considering it was her first meet.  She is THRIVING in school.  I don’t think it hurts that she is such a likeable little girl.  Every time I volunteer in her classroom, the teachers rave about what a good little girl she is.  It makes my heart melt.  SHE makes my heart melt.

My little fish at her first swim meet!

I am ready for 2014.  I am ready for good things to come our way.  I chose a word for the year.  My word is PREVAIL.  It seems like there were many times in 2013 when we were hit with difficult times.  This year, however, is going to be drama-free.  I have to believe that we will prevail in 2014.

May 2014 bring beautiful things to you, too, Dear Readers.

What is your word or resolution for 2014?

Weight Watchers Month Three

WeightWatchers360
This is my third month with Weight Watchers and I cannot believe how fast the time has been ticking away. I still cannot believe how incredibly lucky I have been to have this free three month trial to Weight Watchers. They really have been amazing! I found a really great meeting place, where I feel at home. The leaders are great, the staff is amazing and I love all the new things they have done for privacy while they weigh me in.

I’ve been sick for the past couple of weeks with a horrendous cough, cold and sinus thing and sort of fell off the wagon. It was nice to receive a personal note from the leader saying that I have been missed. I am looking forward to getting back to it and re-joining my meeting later on this week.

My Journey to Healthy Eating with Weight Watchers

May 7, 2013 by Laura Lohr 3 Comments

WeightWatchers360

I have been so excited that Weight Watchers has given me the opportunity to try their 360 program for three months free. It has been such an easy program to follow. It is awesome that Weight Watchers has made some really great changes to their program to incorporate healthy eating more intrinsically. One of my favorite things is the ability to find simple and easy recipes within minutes, using their phone apps. I love that at the drop of a hat, I can go from, “What am I going to make for dinner?” to “Ohhhhh, ahhhhh, THAT looks good!” while standing in the middle of the grocery store and pushing my empty grocery cart.
