My Top Ten Favorites So Far

August 6, 2011 by Laura Lohr 2 Comments

My top ten favorite things at BlogHer 2011 so far:

1. Networking and connecting. I have met so many awesome bloggers, women, and people in general. I have made real friends that I will keep in touch with. I will be sad to part ways with them on Sunday.
2. The sessions. I learned so much! The women on the panels and in the audience have so much information. They are bright, funny, successful, and incredible.
3. The swag. OMG. So much good stuff! I have the opportunity to try so many new products. I have met so many representatives from so many great companies. There are terrific brands that I am excited to work with in the future.
4. I won a new LG Galaxy tablet! I went to a luncheon with Verizon Wireless yesterday and they treated us like royalty. Diana Zaccardi was the speaker. She is an executive of Verizon Wireless and she was an inspiration.
5. My roommates. I have the coolest roommates ever! They have their own magazine called Mamalode. I had the best time with them at Sparklecorn last night.
6. The opportunities. I have been given many opportunities to do and learn new things. I did yoga two mornings in row, while the sun was rising.
7. The full belly laughs with new friends and old.
8. The parties, the meet-ups, the dinners and luncheons, and gatherings.
9. The pool and jacuzzi.
10. That there is more to come today and tonight.

Stay tuned for my big wrap up later AND I will be giving away some really cool swag.

If you are here, what are your favorite things from BlogHer 2011?

A Day Well Spent

July 2, 2011 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

The month of June was a success here at the Lohr household. We managed to stay healthy all month long and that was quite a feat. I have been working on managing my stress and finding ways to balance all aspects of family life. I carved out some time to exercise towards the end of the month and found my way back to eating healthy.

Today Mr. Bear suggested we go to the beach—during a holiday weekend. I was not excited about the idea. The thought of parking and crowds at the beach was less than appealing. Nonetheless, I wanted to spend time with family and besides, I was getting dirty looks for not wanting to go.

“We’ll only go for an hour,” said Mr. Bear.
“FIIIIINNNE, I’ll go,” I replied sharply, making it obvious I did not approve.

Just as expected, the parking was horrible. The beach was packed. People had their head up their butts and it was annoying. What I did not expect, however, was having the best run in some time.

As soon as we set up our spot on the beach, I set my GPS and ran. I felt like I was running fast and I felt so free. I could feel the sand dragging me down slightly, yet it felt good. It was more resistance than drag and the resistance felt wonderful. Down the beach, there is a steep cliff that stretches along much of the shoreline. I have run this stretch before during marathon training. It is called the “low tide run” and it is one of the best runs I have ever done. Today, as I ran down the beach the crowds thinned out to nearly nothing and I was able to recapture the memories of the low tide run. I love Torrey Pines State Beach. It is really beautiful. For a good distance, the tide was out far enough for me to run along the deserted stretches of beach. Alone, with my thoughts, I was at peace. I was running. I was content. I was happy.

I managed to run 3.25 miles and take this photo.

When I returned to our spot on the beach, Mr. Bear and Allie were out catching waves and playing in the surf. It was a perfect day. Life is good.

Last Night in Hawaii

March 26, 2011 by Laura Lohr 2 Comments

On our last night, we went to a luau with the Boehms. We all had a wonderful evening. I went incognito, to hide my Quasimodo eye and chicken pox’s. We had such a good time, with such great company. We were sad to go, knowing it will be a while until we can get together again.

The luau was at the Sheraton and the grounds were quite beautiful.

Allison played with her cousins, while the adults chit-chatted at the table. Mr. Bear and Allie went on stage to perform a hula with one of the cast. It was a good show and Allie was mesmerized by the performance.

It was a fun night, but ended in tears. It was time to say goodbye to the Boehm family. We are looking forward to many more Hawaiian adventures in the future and are already talking about going back.

Island Fever and Not in a Good Way

March 20, 2011 by Laura Lohr 5 Comments

***(Warning: I am on prescription medication including and not limited to pain medication. This post is photo heavy and rambly. Enjoy!)

Wednesday evening, after going to Akaka Falls and to Kalopa Native Forest State Park, we had dinner in Hilo with our family. We had a delicious island dinner, consisting of local flavors and specialties. As we were sitting at dinner, my eye began twitching, like I had an eyelash in it. I did not think much about it, however, by the end of dinner I felt terrible. We had a two hour drive on winding roads and I was getting car sick. Normally, I do not get car sick or air sick, yet I have been nauseous in every mode of transportation since the trip started.

Thursday, I felt pretty sick. My lymph nodes were swollen and my eye was swollen shut. I was beginning to believe I had been bit by something in the rain forest. Friday, we went snorkeling at the City of Refuge in Pu?uhonua O H?naunau National Historical Park. My mom’s cousin offered to take me to the hospital and warned me that I really needed to go. I insisted that I would be fine and trudged through it. It is not difficult to trudge through difficulties here. The company has been wonderful and we are in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Allie found a coconut, near the sacred grounds, near the Captain Cook’s monument.

DSC_0048

DSC_0012

THIS is the reason why it is so easy to trudge through it all. Kona has the most beautiful sunsets!

DSC_0031

Prettier sunset than this? I think not!

These were both taken on my cousin’s lanai. They have doors that slide away, leaving their living room completely open to enjoy the lanai. It all connects to the kitchen, the living room, and dining room. (Their kitchen makes me want to remodel. They have the best kitchen set-up ever!)

DSC_0027

The doors on the left open completely up. It’s so awesome!

Friday night, we all went to the Kona Brewing Company; something Mr. Bear has been talking about doing for months now. We found a growler in the cupboard at the condo and refilled it with beer to bring home. The food was tasty and as always, the company was wonderful.

Still, as I sat there, I wondered if I would be able to make it home without incident. The right side of my neck had grown into an angry, painful lump that extended from behind my ear, all the way to my shoulder. My eyebrow felt like I had bumped it very hard and I had a large bump on my forehead that was unexplainable. I took some allergy medication, which alleviated some of the pain. I was still miserable.

DSC_0042

DSC_0075

By morning, my eye was completely sealed shut and I felt like I had been beat up by an angry mob with bats. At 6:30 a.m., I woke Mr. Bear to take me to the Kona Community Hospital Emergency Room. The nurses suggested a possible allergic reaction, nevertheless, the doctor was not so sure.

I feel pretty! Oh, so pretty!

Shingles. The diagnosis was Shingles (also known as the “adult chicken pox”). Evidently, if left untreated, it is possible to render scarring and irreversible damage to the cornea. There were some noted changes. I have some vision loss that should clear up with the virus—hopefully. I will be sure to follow-up with the eye doctor. I will. I will. I have been given anti-viral medication, pain killers (because, this is painful, YO!), and eye drops. I am itchy, uncomfortable, and fatigued. The recovery time is slow and painful from what I understand.

I will not let it put a damper on the vacation though. We are here to relax and have fun. Fortunately, I am not contagious—I would have hated it if I left this wonderful gift to our very kind, generous, warm, and gracious hosts/tour guides.

I thank everyone who sent kind thoughts and concern on my condition. I am on the mend, although I am anticipating a very long road to recovery. Until then, I can expect to look swollen and deformed, much like Quasimodo.

In contrast, here is our beautifully presented sushi in downtown Kona. I could get used to this place!

It’s Tough to Live in Paradise

March 17, 2011 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

We spent another wonderful day exploring the Big Island. We drove from Kailua-Kona, where we are staying, all the way over to Hilo. Along the way, we stopped at the Kalopa Native Forest State Park, where we did a three-ish mile hike. It took us a couple hours and we were surrounded by many beautiful things. Then, we went to Akaka State Falls park and enjoyed the waterfalls. It exceeded my expectations. It was phenomenal! We ended our busy and fun day with dinner in Hilo with our gracious tour guides (my mom’s cousin and her family). It was an amazing, amazing day!

I am not sure what to post first! I was experimenting with different camera techniques and was pleased with the results. Here are some of my favorites:

I love this vacation! We are having the best time!

More than a quarter of a century ago, Eric asked me on a date and took me to the restaurant on the end of this pier. As it happened, my mom ended up joining us. This was a fortuitous twist, as Eric forgot his wallet, and I didn't have any money, as a starving college student.

I started my 5 mile run at that same pier. I smiled to myself, remembering simpler times that, at the time, didn't seem so simple. I breathed in the fresh air and hung on to these memories. I am so grateful for the blind date that worked out to be our love story.
