It took me a while, but running is becoming a routine in my life again. Since we bought our treadmill at the beginning of summer, I have been spending a lot more than I have in a long time. Quitting our gym was the best decision we could have made for ourselves. I am slowly rebuilding my endurance and starting to gain speed. I have been running with the same brand ( ShoeAdviser ) and style of running shoes for about 4 years now. If there is anything I LOVE about running, it is the accessories, the gadgets, the sports attire, the socks and the shoes.
Running is not an expensive sport. All you need is a pair of running shoes and away you go. I know more than a lot of people, however, that being fitted properly for running shoes can prevent injuries and improve performance. After having recurrent shin splints, plantar fasciitis, non-distinct knee pain from IT band syndrome, back pain, Achilles Tendonitis, blisters, and everything else under the sun—believe me! The proper shoes are key to preventing injury!
I was invited by Mizuno to join the Mezamashii Run Project and I had the opportunity to try a pair of Mizuno running shoes. I called the Mizuno people to order some new running shoes. The customer service representative was instrumental in my choice of shoes. I told him I had a high arch, I need a lot of support and tend to pronate, which shoes should I choose? He took his time and answered all my questions and helped me find the right shoes for me. I impatiently waited for them to arrive. The first day I tried them, I was nervous. I have had bad experiences in the past with choosing the right shoes and that resulted in some very serious injury that has taken me out of training seasons and side-lined me for long stretches. As soon as I slipped them on my feet, it was like heaven. It was just the right amount of cushion, just the right amount of arch support and just the right fit.
How did they work? In a word? Fabulous!
I took it easy the first day out. I hopped on the treadmill and did a combination of running, jogging and walking. I felt great! I had no complaints from my feet, my ankles, my knees, my hips, or any of the common 87,000 injuries I have encountered in the past. Thinking it might be a fluke, I wore them again the next day and did my normal interval running—bracing myself for issues. To my great joy and relief, I felt amazing after my run. Rinse, lather, repeat the next several days, I actually noticed the nagging knee pain I have been having over the past several months was completely gone!
