The BFG

July 4, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

The BFGThe BFG movie just came out and we got a chance to see it. As a kid, I loved to read! Some of my favorite authors were Judy Blume, C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, and growing up in the 80’s, I LOVED the Nancy Drew series. I loved fantastical stories, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and books about being a kid, such as Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume. When I heard that Steven Spielberg was going to be involved in the creation of the movie, The BFG, I was really excited! Who else would be better at directing a fantastical story than the man who brought us E.T.? My 80’s inner child has been squealing with delight in anticipation of watching the movie!

TheBFG5735f63d5aa55On Monday, Mr. Bear, Allie Kat, and I went to see the movie and didn’t know quite what to expect. While I’ve read nearly all of Dahl’s classic kids’ books, The BFG wasn’t one of them. The story is about a little girl named Sophie, who lives at an orphanage. She is a little girl who likes to read and sneak through the halls of the orphanage late at night. Little Sophie has insomnia.

TheBFG57730a45b5e29

The story follows Sophie through the halls of the computer animated orphanage the first few minutes of the movie. We learn a lot about Sophie in those first few minutes—her fear of the boogeyman, that she’s full of spunk and spirit, and that she doesn’t quite enjoy being at the orphanage. Now, enters BFG. When Sophie sees BFG, he snatches her up and carries her off to Giantland—a horrible place!

TheBFG576af9462612aThe story is about an unlikely friendship, about bravery, standing up for yourself, and reminds us that things aren’t always what they appear. We learn that BFG is bullied by the giants he lives with. We learn he is kind and loving. It reminds us that we’re more similar than we are different.

I may be a big sap, but I thought the movie was sweet and it made me cry. I love BFG because he’s so charming, in spite of all his flaws. The BFG reminds us to hold on to our dreams and believe. Sophia teaches us to be brave.

TheBFG57730a449028f

The computer graphics of the movie were amazing! Allie thought that BFG was an actual actor. She hadn’t realized that he was altered with CG. It was a beautifully done movie and loved it! I learned that The BFG started as a bedtime story for Dahl’s own granddaughter Sophie and later became a book. I love the very personal aspects of this bedtime story turned book, turned movie.

The BFG is a likable character. He says things, “squiggly” when he tries to talk and makes up his own words when he can’t think of the right word. He calls farts, “whizzpoppers” and likes to drink “frobscottle,” which fizzes down, instead of up, and can bring on a healthy case of whizzpoppers.

TheBFG576af9463c6d7

The movie is so cute! It’s great when childhood classic stories from my youth turn into movies and then can be shared with my own daughter. This is a simple movie, with very simple themes, and I think it’s great for the whole family.

Disney’s New Jungle Book

April 20, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

JungleBookPosterLast week, we got to see Disney’s New Jungle Book. I have to say that overall, I’m a skeptic about sequels and remakes of movies. It isn’t very often that my socks are knocked off for a remake of an animated classic. This movie, however, totally wowed me! I LOVED IT! First of all, the first rate cast was awesome! The CG animation was stunning! They really did a fantastic job breathing life into a classic movie, without taking away from the magic of the original!

The cast of Jungle Book includes top-notch talent, such as Christopher Walken as King Louie. In Walken fashion, he adds a likable, yet creepy element to his character. I love Bill Murray and have been a fan of his for many, many years. He makes a perfect, lovable Baloo. What a terrific choice for Baloo! Scarlett Johansson’s character Kaa the snake is more dark than I remember from the original, but makes for a twist that only compliments the new version. Ben Kingsley velvety voice makes the beloved Bagheera as magical as he was in the original film.

The massive King Louie summons Mowgli.

I hadn’t realized before that the Jungle Book is based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. The movie is directed by Jon Favereau and he really takes the audience on an amazing jungle adventure! Everything about this movie is visually stunning and will keep you on the edge of your seat, even if you’ve seen the animated original. There’s enough plot twists and turns that will keep you guessing what’s going to happen next. I love that there are recognizable themes and characters in the movie, however, there is freshness in this movie that keeps it very contemporary. You’ll be singing along with the familiar songs from the original, including, “The Bear Necessities,” and “I Wanna Be Like You.” In my opinion, no remake of the Jungle Book would be complete without Baloo belting out, “The Bear Necessities.”

This movie does have some intense scenes and may not be appropriate for younger, more sensitive audiences. While there are no graphic scenes and without giving any spoilers away, there are some sad scenes. It was very appropriate for Allie, who is 10 years old. Mr. Bear, Allie, and I really enjoyed the movie and found it to be very suspenseful, charming, entertaining, and still honors the classic.

If you’re looking for a great family movie, this one aims to please!

Disney’s Zootopia Movie Review

March 2, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Zootopia5669c94c46210Allison and I were able to preview Zootopia last week and we loved it! It was laugh-out-loud funny! There’s something for everyone—adults and kids alike. There’s no shortage of heroism, bravery, good guys, bad guys, and plenty of adventure! The movie has undertones of important social issues, such as gender equality, race relations, and justice. Not only are the themes socially responsible, it’s animation is amazingly beautiful to boot!

Zootopia562eb949df2e8

The movie’s main character is our hero, Officer Judy Hopps, a petite bunny, whose sense of justice, commitment to serving her community, and eternal optimism makes her a relatable and likable character. In spite of being a polar opposite, Nick Wilde, a sly, sarcastic, pessimist fox, teams up with Officer Hopps against his will to help solve the mystery of animals going missing in Zootopia. The pair have to find common ground and overcome some deeply entrenched prejudices and beliefs they have about each other, and find they make quite an effective team!

Zootopia562eb988ac409

Zootopia is a movie about overcoming stereotypes and understanding that often things aren’t what they appear to be. Zootopia is an interesting big city, where social, gender, and race issues abound. The city is comprised of natural predators and prey animals that co-exist together, but not without tensions. For example, when animals go missing, prey animals become suspicious of predators.

Zootopia562eb98893bcd

When Officer Hopps finishes the academy and receives her first assignment, as a meter maid, she feels as though being a bunny and a female bunny at that, she is unfairly judged. But, Officer Hopps finds a way to take on the case of the missing animals, as a means to prove her worth as an officer, to her boss, her department, to Nick Wilde, and to herself. The spunk of Officer Hopps, however, prevents her from letting anything get her down! She’s truly lovable!

Zootopia56554cc5ba066

The movie has great music, with Giselle, the pop star, played by Shikira. There’s dancing. There’s jokes that are appropriate for the whole family and will make everyone laugh. The humor in the movie is quite endearing! The underlying theme that you can be anything you want to be, no matter where you come from or what others believe about you is weaved throughout the storyline. You begin to cheer for Officer Hopps and you learn to love Nick Wilde, once you find his softer side. The character development leaves you loving the city of Zootopia and its residents.
Zootopia55d26eac62b34As Nick and Judy set out to solve the mystery, you’ll find yourself rooting for the underdogs! Where have the missing animals disappeared to? Will Officer Hopps find the way? As the mystery progresses, Nick and Judy use their unique instincts and talents to find clues about the missing animals. They’re able to prove they can transcend stereotypes, about predators and prey. They turn out to be a great pair!

It’s a great movie that will appeal to the whole family! Zootopia opens in theaters March 3rd!

Star Wars The Force Awakens

December 21, 2015 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

starwars55352e4edd978

I have been so excited about the new Star Wars The Force Awakens! It has been far too long since the last Star Wars came out! When I found out I was going to be able to see the premiere before the movie hit the theaters, I was beside myself! Mr. Bear and Allie Kat were so very jealous, as I couldn’t bring a guest and the screening was TOP SECRET!

starwars5669d25d34714

I was so very curious about the new movie. I knew they were going to bring back some of the original cast and I was over the moon about that! Some of the previous Star Wars movies that introduced new characters, such as Attack of the Clones didn’t resonate with me as the original trilogy did.  I have to say that this was my favorite of the Star Wars series, since the Return of the Jedi in the 1980’s. This movie really brought out my inner-kid-excitement. What a delight it was!

There’s all the components of the perfect Star Wars story: there’s a love story, there’s good vs. evil, there’s witty rhetoric, there’s action, there’s suspense—Where’s Luke? Best of all, there’s Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, C3PO, Chewbacca, R2D2, Han Solo, AND THE MILLENNIUM FALCON! What more can you ask for? This movie hit all the marks for me. There was something that seemed so much more familiar with this movie than in the past few Star Wars movies. It felt like having a dinner, with all my favorite guests—-only with lots of fast-flying, stormtroopers, explosions, and gunfire.

Star Wars The Force Awakens

I feel in love with Rey, BB8, and Finn, three of the Star Wars series newest characters. Rey, is a tough scavenger, that unwittingly gets tangled up in the Resistance, simply by chance. It turns out that she’s quite a force to be reckoned with (See what I did there? Force. Uh em. Moving on).

Star Wars The Force Awakens

Finn flees the First Order, after leaving his post as a Storm Trooper and accidently joins the Resistance. BB8, the latest droid character in Star Wars will be sure to find a place in your heart. The trio joins the search for Luke Skywalker, whose location has been a mystery since starting a Jedi academy, where one of his Jedi apprentices betrays him.

starwars55df5d948fd16

Is this the must see movie of 2015? 2016? I think so! I really enjoyed the movie. It was well-done and the while the movie raises still more questions than it answers questions, some surprises are revealed. There’s a lot more to this story and the ending does lay the framework for the next movie to come in the series, leaving you wanting much, much more Star Wars! Do they find Luke? Does the Resistance defeat the First Order? Will R2D2 come back? Will the Jedi’s have a revival?

Sorry, no spoilers here. You’ll have to see the movie for yourself! I can say that you won’t be disappointed!

Disney Tomorrowland

June 15, 2015 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

tomorrowland5536a4061130cDisney Tomorrowland was released in theaters recently and a flood of fond memories washed over me. I grew up in Southern California and as a kid, we would go to Disneyland at least once a year. I looked forward to those visits and savor the magic of those visits even today. When I was a kid, Tomorrowland always fascinated me at Disneyland. Back then, there were a few attractions, such as the People Mover, Captain EO, Star Tours, Mission to Mars, Space Mountain and the Tron attraction are all memories that will forever be exciting childhood memories of innovative technology and looking forward into the bright future.

I was really excited to see Disney’s Tomorrowland movie in theaters, but I have a huge confession to make—George Clooney doesn’t make me swoon. There it is, ladies! Forgive me. I had to get it out of the way. I do like him as an actor though and I was pleased with the cast of characters. I had expectations of magic and the future in this movie. Like the Tomorrowland of my childhood, this movie had hopes of the future and childhood dreams, just as I had when I visited Disneyland in my youth.

TomorrowlandPin

The story is about a little boy, Frank Walker, with a mind full of ideas to make the future better, who visits the World’s Fair and discovers Tomorrowland. Frank meets a little girl, named Athena, who turns out to be more than meets the eye. Meeting Athena and going to Tomorrowland changes Frank’s life forever, but not in the way that we would expect it change him. Frank, grows up to be a bitter, sad adult, until another young girl comes into his life, many years later.

Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is an utopian society, full of promise and fresh ideas. The story is also about a girl named, Casey Newton, who years later discovers Tomorrowland, just as Frank Walker has. The movie flashes forward to contemporary times, when Casey enlists the help of Frank to save the Earth from sure destruction. While Frank is not as full of hopes for the future as an adult, Casey still has the dreams that could save the world from its ending.

AthenaFrank

Tomorrowland is a sweet movie about believing in the future and following your dreams. Hugh Laurie is cast as David Nix, who must be stopped from destroying the Earth. Hugh Laurie makes a great antagonist in the movie and George Clooney is a great grumpy old man! Aside from its great cast of characters, the film is great for younger viewers too. I love the message of hope that this movie and that child-like optimism that is a common thread throughout the movie.

More than a quarter of a century ago, Eric asked me on a date and took me to the restaurant on the end of this pier. As it happened, my mom ended up joining us. This was a fortuitous twist, as Eric forgot his wallet, and I didn't have any money, as a starving college student.

I started my 5 mile run at that same pier. I smiled to myself, remembering simpler times that, at the time, didn't seem so simple. I breathed in the fresh air and hung on to these memories. I am so grateful for the blind date that worked out to be our love story.
