Happy Mother’s Day from Disney Pixar’s Monsters University and ME!
I was recently provided the opportunity to read The Willpower Instinct by Dr. Kelly McGonigal. I have to say it was perfect timing, with the new year and various resolutions creeping up on me (PLUS, being sick for the past couple weeks and having some free time to lay around). I was super excited to get some guidance with some of those nagging resolutions for 2013, many that I carried with me through 2012. This year is my lucky year!
The author, Kelly McGonigal, PhD. is a professor at prestigious Stanford University and teaches a class entitled, “The Science of Willpower.” What I loved about this book is that Dr. McGonigal outlined this book as a professor would outline a course syllabus—in a logical, methodological way. The book does a fantastic job explaining the chemistry of the brain, scientific evidence and what exactly keeps us from reaching our all-elusive goals, year after year, no matter how badly we want to achieve them. She explains that much of our beliefs about willpower actually work to sabotage us from accomplishing what we set out to do.
I consumed this book from cover to cover, intrigued by what Dr. McGonigal had to say on the subject of willpower. I learned a lot about myself and why sometimes my strongest desires to meet goals are foiled by overwhelming desires to do what I wanted in the moment, instead of doing what would support my success. We really can take control of our lives, if we truly understand our biological functions, mental traps, and social factors that influence our self-control.
One of the things I found most fascinating, was Dr. McGonigal’s explanation of why we put our goals off until tomorrow. We, according to research, have an inherent belief that our future self will be more virtuous than our present self. She explains that we are hard-wired to prefer immediate gratification in many instances:
When we contemplate the future, our imaginations fail us in predictable ways. Far-off rewards seem less compelling, so we choose immediate gratification. We fail to predict how we will be tempted or distracted, so we fail to protect ourselves from abandoning goals. To make wiser decisions, we need to better understand and support our future selves.
I loved this book. The author speaks in easy to understand terms. She is witty and smart. I enjoyed it through and through. I found myself identifying with many of the scenarios she described in the book. I do believe that this book will be my handbook for success in the year 2013!

It is the holiday season again already. It is difficult to believe we are already nearly done with 2012. One of my favorite things about the holidays is getting a family photo of the three of us and getting our holiday cards out. In years past, I have designed my own, but I have fallen in love with the designs that Tiny Prints offers, year after year. Of course, I am usually putting everything together at the last minute during the holiday season and I have only drooled over the beautiful cards.
For example, I love, love, love the tri-fold cards, like this one here:
Or, this one here:
In years past, I have enjoyed including highlights of the year in a newsletter. This card would really meet my desire to share annual highlights:
I absolutely love these cards and I may just order them this year—with our own photo that we still haven’t taken yet!
Check out the beautiful selection of holiday cards Tiny Prints has available this year. You are sure to fall in love, like I did. The hardest part is going to be narrowing down my selection!

Last week, Allie had the coolest opportunity to show off her Halloween costume to all of San Diego with a few of my fellow San Diego blogging moms and their kiddos. They all looked so cute. Mr. Bear’s mom made most of Allie’s costume, including the cape, the skirt and the boots. It turned out so cute!
Thank you, Fox Channel 5 Morning Show for having us!
Happy Halloween, everyone! Be safe, have fun!
This year, we did something we have promised each and every year we would do. We took a trip together, just we three, for our very own celebration. We decided on an island locale. We wanted to go to Hawaii. Who doesn’t, right? Instead, we booked a trip to Catalina Island; something we have wanted to do for some time.
The days leading up to the trip, Allison would ask us how many more sleeps until our trip. She was very excited about the boat ride over. The morning we were to leave, she leaped out of bed and could hardly contain herself! We arrived early at Dana Point to take our “big” boat ride over. She loved sitting on the top deck of the boat. For December, the weather was beautiful. The skies were blue. The temperature—mild. It was perfect!
We had an amazing trip! We played hard and enjoyed every moment together. Allie was on her best behavior the entire three day trip. Catalina is a seasonal island, procuring most of its guests during the summer months. The streets were practically empty and the hotel we stayed at nearly empty as well. It was quiet from morning until evening and we were able to get away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas, my son was worried for the gifts, but I told him there are sites that tell you What To Get Your Girlfriend For Christmas and more. It was peaceful. It was a slow pace. It was wonderful!
We were able to take a couple tours, including a glass bottom boat cruise and a tour to the interior of the island, where the buffalo roam. Seriously. There are buffalo! We toured the museum at the casino. The casino does not actually have gambling and never has. They take the word from the Italian meaning of casino—gathering place. We learned much about the island and fell in love with the tiny town of Avalon. It is only one square mile, but there is a lot of fun to be had!
Can you spot the buffalo?
Here’s wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!
