Star Wars Rogue One

December 15, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Okay, I know what you want to know! Was it any good? Will I like it?

YES! YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT! I know you want to know if Luke Skywalker is in this one. Is Princess Lea in this one? What about Darth Vader? Well, I can’t tell you that in good conscience. You’re just going to have to go see it!

What can I tell you? It’s really good! I was sitting on the edge of my seat! I laughed—there’s some funny parts and as always—really great characters. You’ll meet some new characters in the Star Wars story and you will love them! There’s a new heroine, named Jyn Erso, who’s as independent as she is beautiful. There’s a new droid on the scene and his name is K-2SO. He’s a reprogrammed droid from the Imperial army. He’s completely loyal and loveable.

My favorite character was Chirrut, played by Donnie Yen. Chirrut is a blind spiritual warrior. He may be blind, but don’t underestimate him! His mantra is, “I am with the force and the force is with me!” Indeed, the force is strong with Chirrut! He’s a rebel fighter that believes in the cause of the rebels.

My favorite character, Chirrut!

This movie didn’t have as much character development as some of the other Star Wars films. This went right into the plot and packed some much into a little over two hours. I don’t remember any slow parts of the movie—it left me nearly breathless between scenes.

There are many twists and turns in this Star Wars movie.  This is where I learned more about the Death Star and why it’s called the Death Star. You’ll recognize some cameo appearances from a few of the original Star Wars staples. This movie filled in some of the gaps from the other movies and tied everything together nicely while leaving me wanting MORE, as the credits rolled. As much as it explained, it left me with more questions. “When will Princess Lea give R2D2 the Death Star plans?” as well as many other questions. I cannot wait until the next movie in the series!

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’re going to love the movie. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, you’ll love the movie! This was my favorite of the Star Wars movies since the original series! Everything about the movie was fantastic, from the computer graphics to special effects, to the cast, to the musical score! I got chills watching it! Really well done!

Star Wars Rogue One opens in theaters this Friday, December 16. You won’t be disappointed!

Ninjago Legoland! Open Now!

May 5, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Ninjago Cermony 3Last Thursday, we attended a preview day of Ninjago Legoland and got to be some of the first park-goers to ride this cool ride. Ninjago is opening at Legoland today (May 5) and it’s pretty exciting! This ride is sure to be a favorite for Legoland guests young and old! This was Legoland’s most expensive rides yet and they pulled out all the stops!

Bahn Mi Ninjago

Ninjago can be found in Ninjago World, where you can enjoy some Asian-inspired Bahn Mi sandwiches.  Enjoy a Bahn Mi on a freshly baked baguette (YUM!) or a steamed Bao Bun (Yummy!) and your choice of lemongrass chicken, crispy pork belly, or baked sweet chili tofu; which is sure to please everyone’s palate! I know I sure did enjoy them! I kept going back for more! In fact, Mr. Bear accidentally chose a sweet chili tofu Bahn Mi sandwich. He’d never purposely choose tofu, as he’s never enjoyed it. OH! But not this time! He actually enjoyed it very much! I love that there’s something for everyone to eat at the Ninja Kitchen! This is going to be a really great addition to the Legoland park attractions. Mmmmm. Bahn Mi!

Bahn Mi Tofu

We got to ride Ninjago a few times the other day and it was a blast! It’s a 4D experience that uses some of the latest technology—this is the first time this technology has been used in the United States! Basically, rather than a gun or blaster you’d use on any of the traditional rides, you use hand movements to destroy obstacles or enemies. The ride is based on the cartoon Ninjago and you’ll recognize many familiar characters from the cartoon.

Ninjago Cermony 4

What if you’re terrible with these shooting type games? Never fear, because Master Wu will show you how to become a martial arts expert in no time! There is a training session that will teach you all the karate moves you need to know to become a Ninjago expert!

https://www.lauralohr.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/ninjago-opening-confetti.mp4

The ride is centered around four ninjas of Ninjago: Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane. The ride utilizes each of the character’s special talents or elements that are unique to them: fire, lightning, earth and ice. While riding Ninjago, you’ll be able to use your hands to throw fireballs at enemies, such as the snake tribes, or shoot lightning at Lord Garmaddon (king of the Skulkuns), or throw iceballs at The Great Devourer, a “giant serpent who can only be defeated by all of the ninja riders working together and using all the elements.”

Allie_Jay_Ninjago

This ride was so well-done! We were so impressed by the details that were not missed in the construction of this new attraction! This is a ride that could be enjoyed by kids and adults of all ages. In fact, my friend Joanne’s son is only 5 and took on 3 family members and beat them all. The more practice, the better the performance on the game. Mr. Bear beat Allie, and I (Or, did we let him win? Wink, wink!) both times we rode, but the second time we had narrowed the margin of his win!

NINJAGO World opens May 5, 2016 and is included in admission to LEGOLAND California Resort. For more information, log onto www.LEGOLAND.com or call (760) 918-LEGO (5346).

Disclaimer: I was invited to preview the Legoland Ninjago ride with my family. All opinions are my own. I only share information with my readers when I believe it will be helpful to them. We love Legoland and think the Ninjago ride is AWESOME!

Miracles From Heaven Movie Review

April 9, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Christy (JENNIFER GARNER) and Anna (KYLIE ROGERS) in a very touching scene of Miracles from Heaven.
Christy (JENNIFER GARNER) and Anna (KYLIE ROGERS) in a very touching scene of Miracles from Heaven.

I went to see Sony’s “Miracles from Heaven,” with Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah. OH MY! So many tears! This is the chick flick of the year! It’s a faith-based film about a little girl in small-town, wholesome family comes down with a painful, rare, and incurable illness. Between the diagnosis, the quest to find a doctor willing to treat the little girl, and enduring the treatments, the faith of the 5-year old’s mother, Christy Beam.

The film is based on the true story of Annabel Beam, who suddenly becomes ill from two digestive disorders. Annabel’s condition is a grave one and the family enlists the help of Dr. Nurko of Boston Children’s Hospital. The family lives in Texas and the strain of having to commute from Texas to Boston for treatment puts a strain on the entire family. Christy Beam, Annabel’s mother begins to question her faith in God, after several difficult situations occur and watching her daughter suffer from an incurable condition. While home from the hospital, Annabel tragically falls 30 feet inside a tree, head first, inexplicably curing her rare illness.

Miracles From Heaven 1

The movie had me in tears most of the time. It was a sweet movie that made me smile and believe in the goodness of humankind. I love that the story not only has a happy ending, I love that it is based on a real family, living in Texas that has a renewed faith in God, in spite of, or because of the life and death situation.

I watched the movie with a friend of mine that spent many days and nights in the hospital with her son, while he battled cancer. Having this friend with me made the movie’s meaning even more profound, knowing someone who had gone through a similar trial with their child. OH! My friend’s son has had a happy ending, too! Life has it’s challenges, for sure. However, I love the message that Christy Beam wanted to convey in the memoir about her daughter—I really felt the message was that beauty is all around us, if we just look for it. Her own personal message, at the end of the film, was that miracles are all around us. I agree. I think there’s miracles and beauty all around us, even in our darkest hour.

I will say that this is a very faith-based film and if that is not something you’re comfortable with, this might not be the movie for you. For me, it was a touching movie about real life. I’ve seen miracles happen and I do believe in miracles!

If you’re in the mood for a heartfelt movie and aren’t deterred by lots of tears, I’d say, GO SEE IT! It really tugged at my heart strings and made me really think about the beauty all around. I love the positive message this movie sends.

Disclosure: I was given the opportunity to preview the movie before it came out in theaters, in exchange for my honest review. Regardless, this blog only provides information I believe will be useful and/or interesting to my readers. All opinions are my own.

Legoland Ninjago Hard Hat Tour

April 6, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

Ninjago, opening May 2016!
Ninjago, opening May 2016!

I was recently invited to a “hard hat tour” at Legoland California before the grand opening of their newest ride, Ninjago. There are some really cool and exciting new things headed to Legoland this spring! The most exciting news? They’ve released the date for the grand opening of Ninjago!

Me Legoland

Ninjago Worksite

The official opening day of Ninjago is May 5, 2016! Woohoo!

Ninjago Press Conference

Ninjago is based on the very popular kids’ cartoon with the same namesake. The ride uses technology not ever used in the United States. It uses the latest technology and is sure to be a ride like anyone has seen before! Riders will train to become Ninjas, using some of the most advanced cutting edge technology by Triotech, called Maestro. Maestro is operated using hand gestures, rather than using a handheld gun to train and then battle like a ninja, while wracking up points throughout the quest.  This 4D experience will give riders the opportunity to throw fireballs, shockwaves, ice, and lightning.

Ninjago Press Conference

In addition to the exciting addition of Ninjago, Legoland has created an entire Ninjago World, complete with its very own Ninja kitchen. I was able to sample some of the tasty choices available in Ninjago World and I can vouch for its deliciousness! The Asian street inspired choices are some very healthy options, even featuring a tofu Bahn Mi for the vegetarian visitor. I tried both the chicken and pork Bahn Mi sandwiches and I have to say, it was true love!

Chicken_Pork_BahnMi

The chicken Bahn Mi sandwich was a spicy sandwich, with just the right amount of ginger and veggies to balance the spice. The pork Bahn Mi sandwich was tender and juicy, and while very flavorful, it was not as spicy as the chicken sandwich. The pork sandwich could be prepared on a Vietnamese baguette roll or a soft pita-sort-of-bread.  It’s definitely a repeat! Although, I’ll be hard pressed to figure out which to choose from!

There are several other additions to Ninjago World, including 22 NEW Lego models, built with over a million Lego bricks. What Legoland creation would be complete without thousands of Legos? There’s so much coming to Ninjago World and I’m so excited to bring my family to the grand opening!

NINJAGO World is included in admission to LEGOLAND California Resort. For more information, log onto www.LEGOLAND.com or call (760) 918-LEGO (5346).

Star Wars The Force Awakens

December 21, 2015 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

starwars55352e4edd978

I have been so excited about the new Star Wars The Force Awakens! It has been far too long since the last Star Wars came out! When I found out I was going to be able to see the premiere before the movie hit the theaters, I was beside myself! Mr. Bear and Allie Kat were so very jealous, as I couldn’t bring a guest and the screening was TOP SECRET!

starwars5669d25d34714

I was so very curious about the new movie. I knew they were going to bring back some of the original cast and I was over the moon about that! Some of the previous Star Wars movies that introduced new characters, such as Attack of the Clones didn’t resonate with me as the original trilogy did.  I have to say that this was my favorite of the Star Wars series, since the Return of the Jedi in the 1980’s. This movie really brought out my inner-kid-excitement. What a delight it was!

There’s all the components of the perfect Star Wars story: there’s a love story, there’s good vs. evil, there’s witty rhetoric, there’s action, there’s suspense—Where’s Luke? Best of all, there’s Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, C3PO, Chewbacca, R2D2, Han Solo, AND THE MILLENNIUM FALCON! What more can you ask for? This movie hit all the marks for me. There was something that seemed so much more familiar with this movie than in the past few Star Wars movies. It felt like having a dinner, with all my favorite guests—-only with lots of fast-flying, stormtroopers, explosions, and gunfire.

Star Wars The Force Awakens

I feel in love with Rey, BB8, and Finn, three of the Star Wars series newest characters. Rey, is a tough scavenger, that unwittingly gets tangled up in the Resistance, simply by chance. It turns out that she’s quite a force to be reckoned with (See what I did there? Force. Uh em. Moving on).

Star Wars The Force Awakens

Finn flees the First Order, after leaving his post as a Storm Trooper and accidently joins the Resistance. BB8, the latest droid character in Star Wars will be sure to find a place in your heart. The trio joins the search for Luke Skywalker, whose location has been a mystery since starting a Jedi academy, where one of his Jedi apprentices betrays him.

starwars55df5d948fd16

Is this the must see movie of 2015? 2016? I think so! I really enjoyed the movie. It was well-done and the while the movie raises still more questions than it answers questions, some surprises are revealed. There’s a lot more to this story and the ending does lay the framework for the next movie to come in the series, leaving you wanting much, much more Star Wars! Do they find Luke? Does the Resistance defeat the First Order? Will R2D2 come back? Will the Jedi’s have a revival?

Sorry, no spoilers here. You’ll have to see the movie for yourself! I can say that you won’t be disappointed!

More than a quarter of a century ago, Eric asked me on a date and took me to the restaurant on the end of this pier. As it happened, my mom ended up joining us. This was a fortuitous twist, as Eric forgot his wallet, and I didn't have any money, as a starving college student.

I started my 5 mile run at that same pier. I smiled to myself, remembering simpler times that, at the time, didn't seem so simple. I breathed in the fresh air and hung on to these memories. I am so grateful for the blind date that worked out to be our love story.
