HD Beauty Review and Giveaway—Win $125 for a Holiday Facial

December 5, 2016 by Laura Lohr 15 Comments

This is the lovely Melanie, of HD Beauty. This cozy and comfortable room is where I had my facial.

“My passion, education, and experience in the aesthetics industry spans 15+ years and my equipment that I utilize in my treatment room is the best(highest quality, manufacturing, and result oriented) on the market today! With a variety of non-invasive result oriented facial treatments under one roof- my customized and result-oriented treatments are second to none! My space is exclusive and intimate!”

I recently visited HD Beauty  for a relaxing and heavenly facial. Melanie Trehan, Master Esthetician was my technician and I have to say she really knows her stuff! Between product knowledge and knowing how to customize my skincare, specifically for my needs using the best skin tightener and other great products.

Sugar Peppermint scrub, by Lalicious. Just in time for the holidays! It smells divine!

HD Beauty is located in Rancho Bernardo, locally in San Diego. My appointment started out with a quick chat with Melanie about what my concerns or problem areas were. I have been learning to get to know my problem areas a little more since I turned 40. I have some dark spots on my cheeks and my forehead from the relentless sun worship I participated in during my teens and 20’s. Melanie knew exactly what to do to help to lighten the spots. I was so impressed with how much lighter the spots on my cheeks are and how baby soft my skin is now! What a huge difference! While they are still there, they have faded considerably.

There's an assortment of holiday products to try. Your skin will thank you!

What I loved about my treatment was that Melanie let me know exactly what she was doing. She walked me through every step.  She showed me which products she used after my facial and let me know what each product did. There are a few things I can add to my skin care regime and I am excited to get started.

Chocolate Truffle Exfoliator. I must have this! You had me at chocolate!

The truth is, when I was in my 20’s and even in my 30’s, I didn’t take care of my skin. I had beautiful skin, but I always complained about the little things. Now that I’m in my 40’s, I see how important it is to take care of my skin. I started getting into a routine only recently and I’ve already seen a huge improvement with the care I’ve been giving my skin. Melanie assured me that it is never too late to get to start a skin care routine.

Isn't this box beautiful? I think I need to do some exfoliating!

The dry weather has been punishing my skin, plus I run outdoors, which means I am in the sun a lot. I am working hard to try to give my skin the nourishment that it so needs. If you’re like me, there’s really never a bad time to have a facial! If you are needing to rejuvenate your skin, relax, and pamper yourself, this gift certificate is going to be just what you need around the holidays.

These sound good enough to eat!

My facial was complimentary, in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Sharp Women’s Health Conference (San Diego Event)

September 18, 2012 by Laura Lohr 1 Comment

Our family has a very special bond with Sharp Healthcare. First of all, they saved Mr. Bear’s life when his lung collapsed in the late 1990’s. Who knew that years later he would join the Sharp Healthcare workforce a few years later and days before our lovely Allie Kat came along? We have nothing but glowing things to say about them as an organization When I heard about the Sharp Women’s Health Conference happening on Saturday, October 6, at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, for sure I wanted to be a part of the event AND spread the word about it.

Here are the details about the event:

Sharp Women’s Health Conference

An inspiring day exclusively for women.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012
Time: Registration, Screenings and Exhibits – 7:30 am Conference – 8 am to 4 pm
Location: Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina

Feed Your Soul with a day filled with:
Continental breakfast
Fabulous gift bag
Free health screenings
Gourmet three-course lunch
Informative breakout sessions on health and fitness
Opportunity drawing with great prizes
Pampering booths

I am looking forward to a day of connecting with the awesome women in the communtiy, getting myself pampered and having a day to focus on my own health and well-being. I am also excited about the break-out sessions, where there is truly something for everyone! Sessions cover a wide-range of topics, including Yoga, Self-Defense, Zumba, Parenting and Grandparenting, Skin Care, Stress Management and so many more!

This is sure to be as fun, as it is informative. It’s a fantastic women’s event – the largest that Sharp HealthCare hosts each year. And there’s something for everyone – whether you’re in your 20s or 70s.

Plus, the exhibit hall features free health screenings (where I learned about my bone density and risk of osteoporosis), Ask-the-Doctor Q&A, free giveaways and product samples from beauty and health sponsors, and fun activities like beauty make-overs and eyebrow threading.

I hear that this year’s gift bags are going to be fantastic! I hope to see you there!

Pampered by FireFly Wellness

August 28, 2011 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

A few months back, my friend Karen at Firefly Wellness. I was gifted a 30 minute free half hour spa treatment with Firefly Wellness. Karen is a licensed massage therapist and esthetician. She has a local studio and she has been doing spa treatments for 11 years, including microdermabrasion, massage, facials, and waxing.

I e-mailed Karen to make an appointment and she sent me a menu of her services. I was curious about the microdermabrasion. I was not sure if microdermabrasion would suit my needs, but I had heard a little about it from a friend. I spent a great deal of time in the sun and under the damaging rays of the tanning bed in my younger, more carefree (READ: CARELESS and WRECKLESS) days. I have some sunspots around my temples and forehead that I find quite unsightly, as a result. Karen was extremely patient and took much the time to help me in my decision. She carefully explained the benefits of each treatment. After a few e-mails back and forth, we decided that microdermabrasion would be the best course to address my concerns for the sun damage. I booked my appointment and anxiously patiently waited for the appointment time to come.

I cannot remember the last time I had a facial or massage. It had been a while. There has been a lot of stress in my life the past couple of months and I knew I needed it. I needed some time to take care of myself.

I arrived at Karen’s house with my daughter. She has a little boy a year or so younger than Allie. The two kids ran off to play. I immediately felt comfortable with Karen. Her office is like an oasis. It is so serene and peaceful: the music, the soothing sounds of waterfalls, the fragrance of calming oils and lotions, and the warm towels were inviting. You can buy essential oils for sale here.

I upgraded my treatment to a full hour and I am so glad I did! The first thing she did was cleanse my skin and my face was tingling. My skin already felt amazing. She did some extractions, which were uncomfortable, but not painful. It was a multi-step process: cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, mask, and then moisturize.

The microdermabrasion is really weird. Karen warned that it would feel like a cat’s tongue licking your face and as gross as it sounds—it is not bad! The microdermabrasion removes the top layer of dead skin cells, and leaves the newer, healthier cells. It makes your skin feel as soft as a baby’s bottom and look youthful. She was took her time and explained each procedure before she did them, letting me know the how’s and why’s. Next, she massaged my neck and shoulders. I am pretty sure I went to sleep during this part. I was definitely in my own little world. All the tension was gone and I was feeling pretty amazing.

When the facial and microdermabrasion was done, I felt so refreshed. I did notice that my skin had a healthy glow and the large, clogged pores I typically have around my nose seemed smaller. I felt like I had a mini face lift, because the tension in my face was completely gone. My skin is much more radiant, my sun spots lighter and my skin is as smooth as a baby’s—well, you know—smooth!

Karen is very knowledgeable about skin care and has a variety of specials she offers. One of the specials she has is really amazing! She offers a significant discount if you buy the services in a bundle. For example, she was running a promotion where you can purchase four microdermabrasion treatments for $220. That is $100 discount!

I definitely recommend Karen. If you are local and looking for someone that really knows how to make a girl feel beautiful, refreshed, and relaxed, she is definitely worth it! Her prices are reasonable. Her products are high quality. She knows what she is doing. You know what else? You are totally worth it!

Disclosure:

I was gifted a free 30 minute facial in exchange for my honest testimonial. I upgraded to an hour long facial and microdermabrasion treatment with my own money. All opinions stated are my own. No monetary compensation was given in exchange for this review.

Star Treatment

July 23, 2011 by Laura Lohr 3 Comments

I got back from the Spaphile blogger event that was hosted downtown at 57 Degrees Wine a bit earlier. I feel relaxed, totally pampered, and ready to take on the world. I was invited to this event a while ago and have been anxiously awaiting the day’s arrival.

I got a facial, a massage, my make-up done, a bikini wax, eyebrows done, hair done and hair tinsel added. I also got to hang out with some wonderful ladies—new friends and old. There were lots of smiles, laughs, exchanging stories, planning our next adventures, and girl talk. So fun!

Many thanks to our hosts. I will be booking some services really soon!

Tomorrow, I am going to another blogging event with the group. This one is for the whole family. We are headed to the Del Mar Races. More V.I.P. treatment. Love.

Lucky, Lucky

July 1, 2011 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

I had to throw out my eye makeup and some of my favorite MAC make-up brushes after the Shingles infection in my eye, but it is okay because I’ll get an Etsee Lauder Gift with Purchase when I re buy the products I need. I had some new mascara and several new eye colors that had to be trashed. I have used Mac make-up exclusively since college, which was a bazillion years ago (Well, 15 anyway.) It was one more frustration to what had seemed like an unending illness. I did not wear make-up for about two months.

So, I was absolutely delighted when I received an e-mail from BlogHer asking if I would like to receive–totally free and with no obligation—make-up from Mary Kay. Why, yes, please! How did you know?

I was not sure when the package would arrive. I was thrilled that it arrived within a few days. I tore open the box to find a gift bag full of beauty goodness. It was a beautiful presentation!

MaryKayEnsemble

The compact is magnetic and all the individual pieces fit nicely into the compact. There is a little compartment underneath for the make-up brushes. It is very lovely, I’d suggest you check the site beardcareshop.com to get your hands on beauties like these!

TADA!

Is it not spiffy? I love it!

At first I thought, “Blue? For my browns? Hmmm. I am not sure about this.” I remember using blue eye shadow when I first started using make-up and it was not pretty. I embraced this blue, however and am very glad I did. LOVE. LOVE. It included step-by-step instructions on how to apply the colors. I made use of these instructions and VOILA, not my junior high experience with blue eye shadow AT ALL! Perfection!

Thank you, BlogHer and Mary Kay for the opportunity to try out this awesome set.
