December 5, 2016 by Laura Lohr 15 Comments

This is the lovely Melanie, of HD Beauty. This cozy and comfortable room is where I had my facial.

“My passion, education, and experience in the aesthetics industry spans 15+ years and my equipment that I utilize in my treatment room is the best(highest quality, manufacturing, and result oriented) on the market today! With a variety of non-invasive result oriented facial treatments under one roof- my customized and result-oriented treatments are second to none! My space is exclusive and intimate!”

I recently visited HD Beauty  for a relaxing and heavenly facial. Melanie Trehan, Master Esthetician was my technician and I have to say she really knows her stuff! Between product knowledge and knowing how to customize my skin care, specifically for my needs using the best skin tightener and other great products. Now, I’m giving you the opportunity to try our Breast Success Pills and Lifting Cream: Full Product Review and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I did!

Sugar Peppermint scrub, by Lalicious. Just in time for the holidays! It smells divine!

HD Beauty is located in Rancho Bernardo, locally in San Diego. My appointment started out with a quick chat with Melanie about what my concerns or problem areas were. I have been learning to get to know my problem areas a little more since I turned 40. I have some dark spots on my cheeks and my forehead from the relentless sun worship I participated in during my teens and 20’s. Melanie knew exactly what to do to help to lighten the spots. I was so impressed with how much lighter the spots on my cheeks are and how baby soft my skin is now! What a huge difference! While they are still there, they have faded considerably.

There's an assortment of holiday products to try. Your skin will thank you!
There’s an assortment of holiday products to try. Your skin will thank you! I’m not sure what is in the colorful foil, but they look delicious!

What I loved about my treatment was that Melanie let me know exactly what she was doing. She walked me through every step.  She showed me which products she used after my facial and let me know what each product did. There are a few things I can add to my skin care regime and I am excited to get started.

Chocolate Truffle Exfoliator. I must have this! You had me at chocolate!
Chocolate Truffle Exfoliator. I must have this! You had me at chocolate!

The truth is, when I was in my 20’s and even in my 30’s, I didn’t take care of my skin. I had beautiful skin, but I always complained about the little things. Now that I’m in my 40’s, I see how important it is to take care of my skin. I started getting into a routine only recently and I’ve already seen a huge improvement with the care I’ve been giving my skin. If you want to bring back the skin’s natural glow, make saggy skin around the eyes tighten, check this Dermawand for acne on healthyorbit.com. Melanie assured me that it is never too late to get to start a skin care routine.

Isn't this box beautiful? I think I need to do some exfoliating!
Isn’t this box beautiful? I think I need to do some exfoliating!

The dry weather has been punishing my skin, plus I run outdoors, which means I am in the sun a lot. I am working hard to try to give my skin the nourishment that it so needs. If you’re like me, there’s really never a bad time to have a facial! If you are needing to rejuvenate your skin, relax, and pamper yourself, this gift certificate is going to be just what you need around the holidays. Legoland Brick or Treat Halloween Birthday

October 28, 2016 by Laura Lohr 2 Comments

legolandgifWe were invited to Legoland for the Brick or Treat event they have every year. We’ve always wanted to go, but this was the first year we got a chance to go.  We got to celebrate Allie’s birthday at Legoland and she was over the moon! Her birthday falls just after Halloween, which means she usually has had a Halloween-themed birthday almost every year. This year, she invited three friends to Legoland for her birthday and they had such a blast! They walked their legs off and rode every ride they possibly could!

Here they were, waiting patiently for their turn on stage for the costume contest. So cute!

Legoland puts on quite a party every Saturday in the month of October. Their Brick or Treat is great fun for kids of all ages and their entertainment is top-notch, I am pretty sure they even hire the jumper rentals in Phoenix (https://jumpersnrentals.com/phoenix/) for entertainment! We got candy, entered a costume contest, rode rides, went to the waterpark, attended a dance party, got our fortune told by Legoland’s own Great Bricktini (he was hilarious!).  There are arts and crafts, the boat ride is turned into a Ghost Cruise Adventure, there are people walking around on stilts, and so much fun that we didn’t get to do everything we wanted. Our day was fun-filled and the weather was absolutely PERFECT! San Diego weather is always PERFECT!

The costume contest was so much fun!

Ninjago, before costumes!

We started our day at the waterpark. It was a perfect day to sun ourselves, ride the slides, float down the lazy river, or hang out in the wave pool. The park is lush and beautiful, with plenty of spots to spread out and enjoy an afternoon nap on a lounge chair, or whatever you like. Mr. Bear and I were so impressed with how nice and well-maintained the entire park is. Everything is clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a delicious caesar salad and a burger for lunch. It was perfect!

After the costume contest, they rode Ninjago again. So much fun!

The girls are 11 and they were able to roam the park without supervision. We ran into them a few times and they were building boats out of legos at one of the stations set up for the kiddos. They played in the wave pool for a while. We spent a few hours at the waterpark with our Park Hopper passes, then they were ready to hit the Legoland park.

The costume contest was AWESOME! There were so many really cool costumes. The girls dressed up as Pokemon characters and they were so cute! The costume contest has INCREDIBLE prizes, including park hopper passes to Legoland and a stay at Legoland Hotel! Woohoo! The girls didn’t win, but they had a blast and all the costumes were so cute!

These four had such a great time!

The park rides remained open long after the park was set to close. The girls got to ride all of the rides they wanted to and some of them more than once, they even had the best bounce house for toddlers, so little kids could enjoy too! As we were leaving the park, I ran into my sister-in-law, who was there with my adorable nephew, dressed as a Ninja Turtle. Oh, too much cute!

Thank you Legoland for making Allie’s 11th birthday so very special!

This is the LAST weekend for Brick or Treat until next Halloween. You’re not going to want to miss out on the fun! Legoland park and the Sea Life Aquarium are open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Legoland Waterpark is open 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., and this is the LAST weekend!

Have you ever been to Brick or Treat? What would be your MUST DO this year at Legoland?

A Mother Daughter Weekend at the Oaks at Ojai

October 11, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

oaks_at_ojai_coverThere are some things in life that happen at just the right moment. One of these things happened last weekend, when I was invited for a complimentary spa weekend getaway with my mom near Ventura, at the Oaks at Ojai. It couldn’t have been better planned. My stress level was a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10! I love the area around Ventura, but had never been to Ojai and I’d NEVER had a spa weekend. It was due time to connect with my mom and I was so excited! They offered us one complimentary spa treatment, as part of our package and I was counting down the hours until my appointment!

On our way to the Oaks at Ojai!

My mom, touring the beautiful grounds at the Oaks at Ojai.

We left Friday afternoon, enthusiastic and ready to indulge all our senses in Ojai. We had a blast on our road trip and arrived about 2 p.m. in the quaint, lovely city of Ojai. My mom and I immediately took a sigh of relief when we arrived, imaging what heaven was in store for us!

The entrance to our amazing bungalow! We LOVED 302!
The entrance to our amazing bungalow! We LOVED 302!

We checked in at the front desk and were given an orientation about what to expect, where the important amenities were, like the sauna, the jacuzzi, the dining room, the pool, where we would be getting our facials, and finally, our room! The atmosphere immediately put us at ease, as did the friendly staff. We were escorted to our room, just a short distance from the inviting pool.

The view of the pool, where I spent a few quiet moments. There is a canopy that partially shades the pool and it was so nice!

Our room was absolutely stunning! First, you walk through this beautiful, private courtyard, complete with lounge chairs for enjoying the sun and a patio area to enjoy our morning coffee, or dinner, they actually had the best backyard design ideas for patios in Julian CA. There was a lovely water fountain right near our door. My mom and I were giddy with anticipation to get inside and commence the pampering!

Beautiful Rooms!

The interior of the room was as amazing as the exterior! The living room is spacious, complete with a wet bar, fireplace, refrigerator, and  comfortable sitting area. The bedroom is roomy and the beds are like sleeping on a million feathers! I slept so well each night! The bathroom had a fantastic shower, full jacuzzi bathtub, and was beautifully adorned with Spanish style tile which is similar to the tub we had home, although that one we needed to repair it for the use, luckily we found hot tub repair denver that did a great work for us. If you’re dreaming of a beautiful bathroom too, you’re lucky since there’s an budget bathroom remodeling company at grandbathroomrenovationssydney.com.au. I felt at home and I was pretty sure I was never going to want to leave!

Here is our spacious bedroom. The beds were heavenly! I slept like a baby!

Being very health and fitness conscious, we were pleasantly surprised with the preparation and care that goes into providing a wide range of healthy food options and ways to stay fit. There was always fresh fruit and snacks available in the lounge, as well as activities going on throughout the day.

I am sad I didn't get a chance to use this tub! It was so pretty!

Lots of Activities!

We participated in several of the fitness offerings that go on throughout the day, including yoga, meditation, and a history walk through the lovely area of Ojai. You are free to choose whatever exercise or activity you choose. With 15 different class offerings per day, you’re sure to find something that suits your desires. We opted for a nap one afternoon, although we had originally planned on taking a water aerobics class. You can be as active or relaxed as you like. We were given a blank schedule form to fill out with all the activities we thought we might like to do during the weekend and we enjoyed almost every one of our choices (except for the time we napped!).

The gym had a little of everything. Right next door was the yoga/dance studio.
The gym had a little of everything. Right next door was the yoga/dance studio that used to be a ballroom when the building was still young.

Great Location!

Saturday morning, I got up early to go for a ten mile run. I stopped off at the dining area to grab some breakfast and met some ladies that were hiking some of the local trails, with one of the Oaks at Ojai’s guides. I almost ditched my run to join them. It sounded like so much fun! Ah, well. Half marathon training continues! Next time, I’ll take that hike! What a beautiful run it was! I took the bike trail, which is 16 miles long. It starts in Ojai and ends at the ocean. It was all downhill and the views were breathtaking! About 3 miles into my run, I met a group of four runners that let me join their group. It was a gorgeous run! I ended up running 9.5 miles and then had Uber take me back to the resort.

The sun was still coming up when I left for my run. It was beautiful, watching the sun rise.

Healthy and Delicious Meals. No Cooking for me!

We enjoyed many healthy and delicious meals, but my very favorite, was the dessert! We had this dessert that was so good, I couldn’t even believe it was low calorie! It had a cherry pie-like filling, with some granola sprinkled over the top, then drizzled with some vanilla yogurt, then topped with a strawberry. It was so tasty and it looked amazing! The recipes for a lot of the meals we ate are on the Oaks at Ojai’s website.

My favorite! I’m SOOOO making this at home!

Spa Services.

My mom and I both decided to try Fit & Firm VitAD Fortified Lifting Facial w/AHA. This was 75 minutes of absolute bliss! I was so relaxed and my skin looked 10 years younger afterwards! My mom and I both kept complimenting each other on how great the other’s skin looked. We looked amazing! We both had a glow and our dark spots seemed to have faded a little. I did feel as though my face was firmer than it was before the facial. It felt so nice!

Sunday, we both got a pedicure before we wrapped up our day at the Oaks at Ojai. Oh! I could have spent more time there, for sure!

The City of Ojai

Saturday morning, my mom took the historic tour that the hotel manager leads. She had such a great time, learning about the history and the unique characteristics of the little city of Ojai. Ojai is very community-oriented and the park was built by the residents. Most of the shops and stores in Ojai are locally and privately-owned, as the city prefers to keep the big corporations out and the unique, small-town feel preserved. On Sundays, there is a farmers’ market, that boosts locally sourced foods and goods, including many organic, Ojai-grown fruits and vegetables. If you want a relaxing place to stay, then check out this hotel & spa St Austell.

We spent some time here. Ahhhh. Relaxation!
We spent some time here. Ahhhh. Relaxation!

Saturday evening, we took the short drive to the coast and walked along the boardwalk in Ventura. It was a gorgeous night and we strolled along the pier. This is such a beautiful area of southern California. We stopped back by Ventura on our drive back home and got my dad a bowl of clam chowder to take home.

We walked to the end of the boardwalk. It was so peaceful and quiet.
We walked to the end of the boardwalk. It was so peaceful and quiet.

I am so glad we took the time to enjoy each other’s company! This was a perfect opportunity for me and my mom to connect in a very meaningful way. My husband and I often get together with my family, but I don’t always get time with just me and my mom. We got to talk, uninterrupted. We got to relax. We got to relax. We got to eat. We got to exercise. We laughed until our bellies hurt. I had such an outstanding time with just me and my mom. It is time I’ll cherish forever and I can’t wait to do it again!

The Oaks at Ojai is such a great destination! My mom and I met many other moms and daughters staying when we were there. It is an affordable destination for anyone looking to find their inner zen, lose a few pounds, relax, take some extra exercise, or just lounge around.

Who would you take with you on your spa weekend?

We got to enjoy the mother-daughter weekend. Three times a year, the Oaks at Ojai offers a 40% discount off of their program rate for moms that bring their sons or daughters. What a deal!

November 1 – 20 Bring a Friend:  Guests enjoy twice the fun and a 25% discount for both guests who share a room.  Workout, chat poolside, explore Ojai and stay up late catching up!

Our spa treatment and weekend at the Oaks at Ojai was complimentary, in exchange for my honest review. All photos opinions are my own.

America’s Finest City Recap

October 7, 2016 by Laura Lohr Leave a Comment

This is our Triple Crown Finisher photo!
This is our Triple Crown Finisher photo!

This year has been an amazing year, in terms of my personal fitness and health! I’ve run FOUR half marathons since January of this year. I went from being almost entirely sedentary to running several times a week and ultimately completing 4 races in 8 months! Last Sunday, I completed the America’s Finest City Half Marathon in San Diego. It wasn’t my first time running the race, but it sure did feel like my first time! I was very nervous that the weather was going to be really hot, however, it turned out to be just perfect!

Me and my good friend, Mollie, before the race. Look at that view behind us!
Me and my good friend, Mollie, before the race. Look at that view behind us!

This training was a little more sporadic than the three before. It’s summer and it’s hot. I don’t like running when it’s hot! I did run one evening, about 6 p.m. I did a 10 mile run and I’m pretty sure what I experienced halfway in could be categorized as heat exhaustion. Then, we went on vacation to the Midwest for two weeks, where I did some weight training workouts and Zumba, but very little running. It made for the last month of training to be little than desirable, even though I had an absolute blast in the Midwest—Chicago, Indianappolis, the Indiana State Dunes—all of it was AMAZING!

Here I am, running in my Spandits in Chicago, along the Magnificent Mile, where our hotel was.
Here I am, running in my Spandits in Chicago, along the Magnificent Mile, where our hotel was.

The weekend before the race, I ran 10 miles with an awesome group of girls. Some I had run with before and some new friends I had never met. We did this beautiful run along the northern coast of San Diego County, along Moonlight Beach and the San Elijo Lagoon. It was gorgeous and it helped me realize that I really could do it!

Back to the Half! At the Expo!

The day before the half, I went to San Diego to pick up my race bib. I spent a few minutes at the expo, cruising around, looking at all the cool race gear I could buy. I bought a hat for the race, which has become somewhat of tradition for me. It’s my little souvenir for the race. I got some pictures taken at the photo booth they have set-up and then, I left.

Me, at the expo the day before the race.
Me, at the expo the day before the race.

I was really surprised. I didn’t have any race jitters to speak of. Usually, I freak out a little before the race. This time, I was confident I could do it. Plus, I’ve done the AFC Half a few times before and know the course pretty well. I was feeling good that I could finish. I wasn’t sure how fast this time.

That night, I stayed with my friend Pam. We’ve been training together since the beginning of the year. She ran the Triple Crown this year, too. She was kind enough to invite me to stay with her so I didn’t have to drive from Temecula to San Diego at 4 a.m. that morning. We chatted about running most of the evening, ate hamburgers and fries, then turned in early. I got my race gear ready to go and SURPRISINGLY, slept like a rock that night.

At the Race Start

sunrise_afc

We made it to the buses to ride up to the top of the Cabrillo National Monument. A few of Pam’s co-workers met her and my dear, dear friend Mollie met us in the line for the buses. It was still dark when we arrived and I still wasn’t nervous. Once we got to the top of Cabrillo, we took selfies, made small talk and waited for the race to start. There was a sea of runners, taking selfies, lining up for the port-a-potties, and stretching. The race was supposed to start at 6:30 a.m., but at 6:25 a.m., the gun went off, and away we went!

The Race Down Cabrillo

afc-half-1

Mollie and I ran together the first 10 kilometers or so. We kept an easy, but brisk pace. What I love about this race is that the first 6 miles are almost entirely downhill, the next 5 or so are flat, and you really only run up hill for a mile or two. I was messing around with my headphones, my phone, and everything else. We ended up at a 10:57 minute pace on the 10k. Not too bad, at all! Mollie is super fast and I was feeling like I needed some energy. I grabbed a Gu and let her go ahead. I regret not pushing myself harder and keeping up. One of my biggest regrets of the race. I just didn’t think I could keep up with her.

After the 10K

Once I hit the 10K mark, I started to doubt myself. It’s a little self-sabotage I do on almost every single run—no matter the distance! Once I got to the harbor, I was really struggling with my mental game. I had to get myself in the right frame of mind to finish. I began calculating how much more time I’d be running. I was halfway done. I could do the 10K I’d done again!

As we came into the Harbor, across from the airport, I saw the sun coming out and I began to get discouraged. The temperature was climbing and I just wanted to keep myself hydrated. I got my head wet at every water station to keep myself cool. At mile 8, I found a water station with a hose and the volunteers were more than happy to soak my head. I grabbed another drink of water and off I went.

Sunrise over San Diego
Sunrise over San Diego

Once we got out of the Harbor, there’s a very boring stretch of road that goes through the rental car return centers, across the street from the airport. It’s the only part of the entire race that isn’t scenic. I dug deep and kept going, although I was starting to get a little tired. Since I was familiar with the course, I began looking for landmarks. I saw the Star of India, then downtown San Diego. I was getting closer!

The Sprinklers and 6th Avenue

There is a water station on Ash Street, just past the Star of India, and every year they have sprinklers. They also have shots of some sort of alcohol, but since I don’t drink, I didn’t look to see what kind. I got under the sprinklers and cooled off. Mile 10. I’m almost there. Only a 5K left!

After Ash, the course meanders through the streets of downtown San Diego. It’s flat and fast, for the most part, except for 6th Avenue. 6th Avenue is known as, “The Hill,” and it’s the most infamous part of the AFC course. It quite possibly might be the most hated part of the course. By the time you get to 6th Avenue, the sun is out, you’re tired, and you’re ready to be done—BUT FIRST, you must climb the mile long stretch of 6th Avenue that challenges even the elite runners.

The last couple of miles: It's all uphill!
The last couple of miles: It’s all uphill!

I was struggling by the time I got to 6th Avenue, but I just wanted to be done. I tried to run. I’d run a few steps, then walk. Run a few steps. Walk. I did this until I got about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the hill. Then, I started talking to myself, “YOU GOT THIS! DIG DEEP!” I didn’t care that everyone was looking at me. Then, this guy started running with me. He told me I was inspiring him and he needed my positive energy. Well, I needed that boost! I put my head down, passed mile 12 and began to cross the famous Laurel Street Bridge. I was only a few minutes away!

Finisher medals: Left- AFC Half Marathon medal. Right-Triple Crown Medal
Finisher medals: Left- AFC Half Marathon medal. Right-Triple Crown Medal

I hit the finish line and I was exhausted! I finished  2:41:44. It wasn’t my best time. I was hoping to do better. I FINISHED and that’s what matters, right? I had a great time and I think that’s what counts.

I met up with my friends and we got these photos together. Another half marathon is in the books! Yay!
