Summer has began and the training for the “Half Mad Marathon Training Program” started two weeks ago. I met up with the track club on June 12 and we did our first “long run” around the industrial park, near the Road Runner Sports. It is not one of the most scenic of runs in San Diego, however, it served its purpose for our first training run. I wore my trusty Garmin and later realized that I never started it. Little good that did.
I did enjoy the camaraderie and seeing familiar faces while running our three or so mile running debut in the half marathon training. Additionally, I made my first appearance at the Tuesday (summer) night workout with the track club. The atmosphere at the summer Tuesday night workouts is a bit less formal. Instead of running the track at Balboa Stadium, where the sweat and hard work of the marathon track workouts take place, the summer night runs convene in Balboa Park. I realized quickly that my trusty Garmin and Ipod had not been charged and I was forced to run naked. Surprisingly, this made my run more authentic, in the sense that I was completely in tune with my body, (sans tunes, ironically).
I began the P90X fitness program in conjunction with the training and have seen my fitness level increase tenfold, in a short period of time. I am looking forward to posting before and after photos, as I have already seen slight changes in my body.
Thursday, Allie and I went to the Del Mar Fair. Before we made it to the fair, however, we stopped at the grocery store. I was standing in the rear passenger doorway, getting Allie situated for the short jaunt to the fair. While buckling Allie in, I felt a jolt and was then being pinned in the doorway. I quickly realized that the driver parked next to us, had backed into the car door. When she pulled out of the space, I noticed she had her phone in her hand, STILL TEXTING!
I am still stiff and sore, after almost a week. Mostly, I feel like I have a bit of whiplash and my knee was a bit tweaked in the process. My lower back is sore, nevertheless, the most discomfort I feel is while I am trying to sleep.
I took a couple days off from running to recover from the accident and returned to track practice last night. I had one of my best track workouts I ever remember. It was challenging and I reveled in pushing myself to my limits. Without the noise of my Garmin or Ipod, I was able to connect myself to the experience in ways my gadgets do not avail me.
After track practice, Mr. Bear, Allie, and I had dinner nearby, at the Banker’s Hill Bar and Restaurant on Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest. We enjoyed truffled french fries that were so different and so yummy, we will definitely be back.
It is exhilarating to be active with the track club again and to get back into shape!
Here are some of the photos from our day at the Del Mar Fair:
